I can not resist the cute grandchildren. I have a couple myself. They are neat and so are your photos of your "grands".

Thanks for the input. Aren't grands Great! My granddaughter loves to play dress up, and so does this MeMe. She loves getting her photo made as well but her little brother likes to be a big cheese. Actually had several really good shots when we went to the battleship as noted in the first photo. :-)

The picture of the girl borders on child abuse/endangerment(when does she get to be just a child?). Why do some parents have to live out their fantasies through their children?

Well 'flash gordon' shame on you for thinking that way. Can you tell me how you figure this? She happens to be enjoying her childhood because she likes to play dress up and like most all little girls likes to play with make up. She likes to dance and many little girls dream of being ballerinas. Typically she is running around with her hair all down, playing with dolls or aggravating her brother. I'm thinking you haven't been around to many little girls, which actually may be a good thing. Do try to look at it with respect to lighting, composition, clarity and the likes. Thanks, :D

Darn, now I get get the song "Anchors Aweigh" out of my head!

It would be real easy to PhotoShop out the people in the hatch in the background. . .then a nice framed wall print for someone to enjoy for years to come.

Lol, sorry for the song rerunning. Gonna get into photoshop... one day. I'm a little ADD when it comes to getting into it but know that I really need to. Thanks for the comment,

I would like something that looks natural. what do you use? any help appreciated.

I use something that's free and is extremely natural. Been using it since 1977 and it still works perfect. Also, It gives the best Quality shots right after a rain.

I never had one client object to it and best of all I can have it with me most of the day.
Yep, it's what you stated in your post "I would like something that looks natural."

It's the SUN...

Not trying to be a smart A_s here. But my best shots have always occurred
Right after a rain with the soft light that surrounds the person or object.
It's no fun packing lighting gear around.

When there is no rain in the forecast, then 5 minutes before sunset until sunset works almost as well.
Many clients gave me the look when I tell them my plan.
We work out the location and meet 45 to 30 mins in advance.
This includes indoor shooting in a area that will be painted correctly by the setting sun.
Generally I'll visit the interior location 2 times before the shoot for some pre-shots.
The vast majority of the clients have been repeat business and have past my number on to their people.

Good luck.

I know of others that do the same and try to incorporate this as well. :-)

Oh... I will post them correctly next time... sorry

hey Faith's Mom, I haven't even tried to load a picture yet. I really liked your photos. Think the one with the baby was interesting. I've taken a few classes and one thing I try (but do forget at times) is to make sure your subjects eyes are in focus. My main candidates for my pictures are my grandchildren. :D

Hi egglady, I'm new here and just trying to get the hang of this. I'm trying to learn the lighting system myself and have read books and as much as I can on the internet as well. I thought about the DIY set up for a home 'studio'and read everything on the internet about that as well. I bought an inexpensive 2 lt set up and was never happy. I now have a nicer/more expensive system and am much happier. I also bought a speedlite (and saving up for another). I have two softboxes, white and silver umbrellas although I haven't used the silver, and a reflector which was the first thing I bought. However you can't beat the natural light of the sun and as berchman said a north facing window is the best. I guess it all boils down to what you want to build to. Don't know that this helps at all but as a novice it is what I've done and trying to learn.
