Welcome to Day 322 of the Daily Challenge!

Today we are saying 'goodbye' to beautiful Fall and 'hello' to Winter. Share with us your favorite Fall and beginning Winter photos. I realize that for many of you, Fall is long gone and some of you have been experiencing Winter for several weeks. In Georgia, USA, we just experienced our peak fall colors last week and our temperatures are still fairly mild.

For those of you around the globe, share with us what your area is like in the month of November! Remember, 'red' is our wild card and always welcome!

I'm new too, and it took me a while to get the hang of things - when ansering a posting, click on 'quote reply' rather than 'reply' - that will ensure you are talking to the person you intend the message for - and your reply will be in the correct string. To include photos, having clicked 'quote reply', you will find three 'browse' boxes below the text box - click on one and a window will open for your computer and you can find your way to the pictures folder - highlight the one you want and click 'open' at the bottom of the window. That file title will now appear in the browse box and, to the left of it, you can add a title or bit of text. If you tick the box to the right of the browse box your file will be stored so others can download it and obtaing EXIF info - really helpful if the viewer wants some guidance. Good Luck - look forward to seeing your bonfire!

Hi I haven't yet worked out how to post photos here or I would upload a couple to show you the difference I got with different settings. (would love some instructions here from someone on uploading pics.)

Recently took some photos of a campfire. Not knowing what I was doing - first settings were
ISO 100 35mm f5 1/25sec
ISO 100 50mm f5 1/50sec
these two were just of the fire and I thought they were nice and bright with a black background.

ISO 100 20mm f5 1 sec. This had people sitting around fire and they had a nice glow, were recognizable and the fire was good but speed was too slow so all a bit blurred.

Then after some instruction from a friend I took a couple more and what a difference.

ISO 800 40mm f4.5 1/500sec
ISO 800 28mm f4 1/400sec

You need the faster speed, it freezes the flames and looks fantastic, nice and sharp. So set your ISO and f stop to get the faster speed for sharpness.

Of course it all depends on what you want in the picture, how much detail of the grandchildren you wish to see.

My lens is 18-200 Canon

Im new here and love being about before dawn - although, as I'm ancient, I have to a nap when I get back! Took this shot a couple of weeks ago at Shell Bay, Dorset, UK. Be grateful for your opinions - it's a great way to learn.

(Photo) "Difficult shot to get right - the highlights are burned out - What do you think?"

Sorry for the delay in making my comments on this series of 3 photos. I especially like this last one best. Yes, the highlights are somewhat burned out, but you're dealing with an extremely high contrast range. The only way to avoid the blow-out would have been to underexpose, and I like the density of the rest of the scene just the way it is. What appeals to me most are the complimentary colors (yellow lights and dark blue sky).

This is probably caused by the low light infra red emission from the camera to aid in auto-focus. Try going to your cameras menus choices and turning this feature off and try again.

. . . and latching on to someone else's thread is usually not the best thing to do since most of the time it will result in no answers. It's just as easy to start a new thread of your own and you will probably get better results. In your case you could post a new thread in the Photo Analysis section with your image and get some really good feed back. Some other members may chime in and add to, or rebuff, my feed back.

Hi Washy - Yep, my pic is Durdle Door from the air. You've got the wrong avatar - that's the guy that commented on my photo. Can't get back to see it just now but I think it looked like about 400mm - certainly a Canon L I'd say?

Hi Magnetoman. Can't you guess I live in Dorset UK. Yes lots to photograph around here. Stourhead is just on my doorstep, Durdle door and the Juarrassic coast about an hours drive. Whats that white lens your using in your profile pic?

Take off ALL filters and see what happens. This helps with moon shots, which is second hand sun, so it might work with the real thing. DJT

Try a couple of trial shots in auto program then on judging what they are like try shooting im manual f11 and try different exposures times using manual and the bulb setting. I use the bulb settings when taking sunsets some times in fading light.
