David - have you tried changing this image to black & white? It might be my monitor, but I'd also see if lightening the exposure has an impact on the snow and the green of the pines. Those are just PP ideas to see where else this solid image might go.

Thanks, I'll try both of those ideas.

I was in the army and at the time of the cold war we were not permitted into a communist country without special permission and it was to much hassle with the security clearance I had. My wife and I are planning a trip to go as soon as the funds are available

I hope you can get there eventually. Krakow is a good place to base yourself, Auschwitz is about 50 minutes away. There are many tour operators who will collect you from your hotel. I used "Escape2Poland", found them to be excellent.

I'd love to hear how you find the experience, if/when......... Best of luck.

Ideally, a photograph should have a subject, tell a story and evoke an emotion. Yours did all of that and more. Great photograph - tragic chapter in the history of mankind.

John

Thanks. And yes, tragic.

I lost many family members there and find it difficult to view these photos and watch movies about it. I think your photo captures the coldness of that place.

Thanks. It was chilling. I'm sorry for your loss.

You don't have to look to the past to find cruelty.

Did you notice how the barbed wire is closer together at the bottom? No escape there.

There's no escaping the efficiency....

Remarkable, evocative shot. I admire you for being able to make it. I was at Dachau a few years ago and could not make myself go in.

Thanks. I was still undecided on the way there. I'm glad now that I did, but there's no doubt that it does have a lasting impact.

Don't relive the past in the future but remember the cruelity.

Unbelievable that there are people who claim it didn't happen.

Not on my list of places to visit. Your photo certainly catches the mood.

Thanks. Auschwitz wasn't on my list either, until I happened to visit the Anne Frank house during a trip to Amsterdam. That sparked my interest.

Hi Taylor Welcome! I am not sure why you picked those settings? Seem like a very high shutter speed, and F4 seems a little off to. Was it really that dark out? I think the shutter speed was the problem. I would go back and look at your other shots that were done just before this that came out and see what the camera or you did on those.
Erv

That's just it, I didn't pick anything, it was all auto. Should have picked snow or beach scene, would have helped with exposure. Other shots before and after we're at same aperture, but 1/400 sec. They were also at another site. This place....... There was something weird about the light.
