I made it. At the time there was no such thing available, just huge filters for on the front of the lens. It was extremely awkward to reach out front of a long telephoto and adjust for reflection plus the added arm movement would frighten animals if you were not in a blind. So I made the rotary geared polarizer which worked great. I also made other specialty equipment that made my job easier. When other photographers would see my designs they would want them so we made them in small quantities they were marketed by a company called Zyco manufacturing. They would get orders at places like the shows in NY (Jacob Javits) and similar venues, and I would take orders from photographers in the field. We made specialized window mounts for heavy lenses, tripod and lens mounting parts, lens mounting brackets( early Nikon 80-200 zoom didn't have one), radially adjustable macro lighting fixture with an adjustable strobe mounting platform, so light could be adjusted at any angle and from any direction around centerline of lense axis, thereby maintaining proper exposure but giving a more natural light than the flat shadowless light a ring light produces. This was a great unit compact and with the optional adjustable mini mag light unit that screwed into the tripod socket on camera you had a flashlight to see your way in darkness and illuminate subject for focus. I could go on but I probably already told you more than you wanted to know. Hope that answered your question! Glenn

So no one should buy better, or the best gear, until they are a master? I don’t think a master is equal to one of these big lenses the day he first picks it up. We’re all practicing and some progress faster then others, and some not at all. But that shouldn’t stop them from buying the best they can afford and TRYING! Like every other THING out there someone will buy it for show and status but, I think among us humble photographers, 99% buy for the image it produces and that we will delight in when it comes alive on the screen or paper!

I am assuming your joking? If not look at the round tray with all the slots in the photo, that holds the slides and sits on top of the projector from which they are dropped into position for viewing. That round tray is referred to as a carousel slide tray. It's older technology just a little newer than when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Steve Perry's answer is very accurate and is the reason top photographers use these lenses, it has nothing to do with status. Status is acquired like respect it has to be earned with quality work. Steve has shown you some of that and explained in detail what is required to achieve that.

That said I can understand why it appears that some people buy big glass for status, after observing many with expensive long lenses for many years that did not exhibit good technique or produce quality work. I believe they want to do high quality work and purchased the tools they felt were required to do so however never acquired the needed skills. In working with some of these people I never got the impression it was a status thing. More like an automotive technician that chooses to purchase the higher quality tools to make his job easier or even possible. But all mechanics do not have the same skill level.

No I don't think so. Think of connecting a camera to a monopod without a head- A connection plate screwed in directly to the monopod and then the camera to the connection plate via a quick release plate attached to the camera. Hope that makes sense. I have a Manfrotto set up but it is on the heavy side.

Take a look at Sachtler products. I have used their small quick release system for years, the small unit works well on a monopod and the plate can be left on the camera or angle bracket if you have one and not be obtrusive. I use same system on ball heads, gimbals etc. so your not constantly changing plates .
