Thanks for the detailed response. So far I’m really happy with my Canon equipment.

My point was, if I’m willing to pay for an out of warranty repair why would they refuse?

So far, after reading all of this about Nikon warranty/repair issues I’m happy I decided on Canon. A friend offered to sell me his Nikon D90 along with two lenses. He had purchased it from another friend of his. Now, not knowing the camera and lenses history, I’m happy I declined. Now suppose these were gray market items, obviously out of warranty, that needed repair. Nikon would not repair the item? That seems totally stupid of Nikon. Apparently Nikon is protecting the distributor of origin. Why would a Nikon from the USA be different from one distributed to China or Germany? Are they not all made by Nikon in Japan to the same specs? I certainly hope Canon does not have the same “out of warranty” repair issues that Nikon seems to have.

Thanks. Sure wish I’d kept the Pentax H1A. Much better camera I think now. Sold our film cameras at a yard sale before moving to Florida. Gave most of my film processing equipment to a new guy just getting into film. I remember all of the basics from fifty years ago. My new “basic” dslr has so many bell and whistles makes my head hurt. But, it sure can do o lot. Thanks again.

My initial photography experience started 50 years ago as a journalism major at a southwestern university. I started as the photographer for the information services department. I then moved on as a photographer for NASA contractors during the Apollo program. My first camera was a Pentax H1A. I foolishly traded it on a Mamiya Secor 500. I just had to have through the lens metering. While at NASA my primary experience was with 4X5 speed graphic equipment and high speed motion picture photography. Recently a friend offered me his Nikon D90 with two lenses. I declined and instead purchased a Canon T5i with two kit lenses. I have added a 50mm f1.4 and an 85mm f(?) prime lens. It appears most of the discussion here is Nikon related. Bottom line is my experience is over 50 years old. Digital photography is a whole new experience. Rather steep learning curve. The 50 year gap in photo experience was filled as a CPA. I needed to earn a living. I’m hoping to learn a lot quickly here. Thanks in advance.
