Quality with existing lenses is great. I bought the adapter with the adjustment ring. ($200) I tried my 100-400 v2 with my 1.4X with no issues. I have not tried it with my 16 to 35 - but I'm guessing it will work fine.
It does make the lenses longer - so my 70-200 f2.8 is even bigger. But I'll wait to buy the $2,600 RF 70-200 f2.8. :)
I struggled with the same question. I have an 8 year old 5D3 that has been a workhorse. I think the 5D4 is a better version of that. I bought a R5 a few months ago. It's a great camera - photos are super sharp, lots of pixels, and the AF is head and shoulders better than the 5D3 - and probably the 5D4. It's a little smaller and lighter which is nice. I notice a big image quality improvement. I've kept my 5D3 as a backup camera - but I'll probably never using it again. I feel that I made the right choice. I bought the R5 with the 24-105 f4. Much better than the 24-105 on the 5D3. I bought an adapter to use with my other lenses - 70-200 and 100-400.
Beware - I purchased the MSI Creator 15 a month ago from Xotic PC. It was dead on arrival (touchpad didn't work) when I received it - despite the fact that Xotic PC calibrated the screen, so they must have turned the PC on. The fan was also super loud. I returned it the next day.
I purchased a Dell XPS 15 from Costco instead. Great machine. I run Capture One and Affinity Photo on it and it is very fast. Screen looks really good.
I had a Tamron 150 to 600 G1. Sold it and got the Canon 100-400 and 1.4x - much better image quality. The Tamron 150 to 600 G2 is supposed to be a lot better than the G1. Don't know how that compares to the Canon 100-400.
I just purchased a R5 after 8 years with a 5D3. I skipped the 5D4. I feel that I get better images from the R5. I'm going to hang onto the 5D3 as my backup camera - but will probably sell that and by another Canon R series. I'm waiting to see what the next R will be. I find the autofocus much superior. And it's a little smaller and lighter. I crop a lot in my photos - so the larger files help a lot. One downside is that I had to upgrade my laptop as I kept maxing out the ram - but that was 8 years old as well. I went with the 24 to 105 F4 lens. I tested it side by side with the 24 to 70 F2.8 in the store - and did not see much difference. I decided to save some $ to buy the R series 70 to 200 2.8. I currently have the adapter ring for my other Canon lenses. As others state - you have to consider what you use the camera for. I do commercial work for paying clients - so I want to deliver the best images that I can.
I use Affinity Photo and find it comparable to Photoshop. I consider it "almost free." I stopped using PS (I had PS6) once I got Affinity. Lots of tutorials out there.
I am creating a new WordPress photography website and looking for a gallery "plugin" that would allow clients to download their photos. Possibly something that could be password protected, and allows them to see multiple galleries at once. Like a DropBox app - that can live on my website. Thanks...
It sounds like CHG Canon has made LR6.14 work - but I'm still glad I made the switch. Let me know if you have any questions on Capture One. They have some tutorials on how to switch from LR.
I also have an "L" bracket on both my R5 and 5D3. This adds additional protection on the side with the ports and the bottom - where I normally set the camera down. My L bracket is from RRS. There are lower cost options out there.
I gave up on LR6 3 years ago. It was the right move. It's old, unsupported software that does not function with more modern operating systems, applications or hardware. There are many other software packages for reasonable prices that will work better and be compatible with the modern world. Get some free trials and try them out. I use a combination of Capture One and Affinity Photo. There are lots of discussions on what other UHH'ers use.
I recently purchased a R5 after owning a Canon 5D3 for 8 years. I think the R5 is pretty tough - and I don't really worry about the build quality. It's new so I'm more careful with it. But I was careful with my 5D3 at first.
I still have the 5D3 as my backup camera when I'm doing commercial photoshoots. I will probably never use it again as I find the R5 a much better camera with better pic quality and a bit smaller size. I was tempted to get the 5D4 vs the R5, and I'm glad I got the R5. I may eventually buy the next gen R when it comes out and sell the 5D3.
Return it. I don't buy expensive camera gear from Amazon. I use my local camera store - or a place like B&H. They often have prices as good or better than Amazon.
So... I just ordered a BenQ SW271 4K monitor. I wanted one that supported HDR10, and 10bit color depth... and keep the price around $1K. Any pros / cons on my decision? Other options?
