Heh! I am interested in creating poster (20x30) sized prints...Costco doesn't do that, at least not that I am aware of. Camera stores used to, before the advent of digital cameras.....

My R2000 uses dye-based inks.

I have always wanted to purchase a dye-sublimation printer, but W-A-A-Y too much money. With that, I could create up to poster-sized prints of my photographs. However, with a $2000.00 price tag for only a 10.2 inch print, available now, NO THANKS!

(Saw one at Comdex a number of years back that I really liked, but, back then, it was over 15 g's OUCH! Too much for this hobbyist!)

I suspect 'pigment' means oil, These inks are used for semi permanent printing, and is generally not affected by moisture or humidity. (If you touch it with a damp finger, it won't smear)

Does Epson offer any oil based inkjet inks?

Candidly, I can't see aftermarket inks damaging a printer. I don't remember Canon's head setup, Epson has a separate, replaceable head, that I can see a cheapo aftermarket ink plugging the 'spray nozzles'. But, simply taking the head out and soaking in warm water will cure that. It's another story with HP ink carts, the actual print head is built into each cartridge. But again, clogged or dried heads, clean or soak with warm water and all should be right again.

Did this for many years before I exited the consumer side of computers.

(Did I mention that this is not an issue with a color laser printer? <<GRIN>> ) Seriously, color multi-function, laser printers, now can be had, NEW, for under $300.00, many with full duplex printing and wireless connectivity!

Do they use the same photo paper as ink jet?

No. Different type of paper. Hammermill makes a very good gloss laser paper. I don't use it. I print on regular 28 pound paper and then put it in a frame. One can't tell, when hanging on a wall, if it is a photograph or print.

I display many of my photographs at my wife's medical practice. I don't sell them but get lots of compliments. My son's wife is a professional photographer (I posted one of her Christmas cards here before Christmas. She doesn't do any printing at home or her studio. Her husband (My son) is the general manager o one of the largest commercial printing companies in the NorthWest. If she wants something printed (For her own personal use, she gives it to my son and he prints it for her)

She now shoots with a Nikon D5 or D500, don't remember. I do know, she has her photographs professional finished. (I don't know who it is, except they are in Seattle.) It costs her, but her sessions are not cheap, so she can afford it.

When I next talk to him, I will ask him the best gloss color laser paper to use and report back here.

You would be better off to forget about inkjet printers and buy a color laser printer. They are affordable now and, even though toner is somewhat expensive, 2 - 8000 copies from your toner carts and substantially better than inkjets. And..you don't have to worry about the carts drying up if the printer isn't used regularly!

My HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M476dn creates pictures that rival the photograph. If I printed on glossy or semi gloss paper, one would be hard pressed to tell if it is a photograph or printed image.

And MY printer is 4 years old! The new ones will be better yet!

Hello, I am the new guy that just signed up, and first off, it seems this blog is not used very often. However, I hope the few of you left, could give me your learned advice as I have seen in the past forums. Can I just use the oem ink (Canon or Epson) depending on the printer I use, or what i have heard in the past "use our papers and inks to achieve maximum permanence" still true?
Regards,
Millard

In some cases, yes..aftermarket inks, for ink jet style printers tend to be washed out. If you buy after market inks or toners, make sure you buy them somewhere that stands behind their own brand.

Papers? No, any good, brand name papers sold at Costco, Sam's Club, Office Depot, etc. are good, as long as you buy the paper that specifically states for color ink-jet printing. (Or color laser printing), if you have a color laser. Black, not so critical, it's hard to screw up black. <<GRIN>> Good rule of thumb..if the paper you want to buy states it has a high fiber count, stay away from it. Inks will run like crazy if you use it. In the early days of color inkjet printers, it was highly recommended one use a clay based paper, but that no longer applies. The newer inkjet specific papers, work as good as and sometimes better, than clay paper, and, is substantially cheaper!

(I still have my original color inkjet from HP..it is called the PaintJet, It 'required' HP's special paper, which was a clay based paper. I have 200 or so, cartridges for the PaintJet, as HP quit selling them back in the late 90's. That printer was awesome with my Amiga line of computers. I get it out on occasion a use it. I have refilled 1 set of cartridges several times with bulk paintjet inks, and use good paintjet paper. It was only 180 DPI but every Amiga owner had to have one....I bought mine at Comdex back in 1997, I think it was. Special price of $899.00 direct from the Hewlett Packard booth. List was over $1300.00, if I remember correctly.

I digress..Sorry...You should have no problems using most aftermarket inks and papers.

Hello from Michigan :). Nikon user here, I shoot a little bit of everything, but have been concentrating on portraits, children, maternity and newborns. Haven't been part of a forum in a long time, but this one looked interesting!

Welcome aboard!

I like the overall composure of this photograph. The soft, slightly out of focus, background, and the combination of the girl's chocolate skin, black hair, white ribbon in her hair, and the hint of pink in the girl's foot, all framed nicely by white.

Yup...Good eye!

Is that the Cornish-Windsor bridge? If yes, I remember, from a visit there a number of years ago, that it is the longest covered bridge in the United States! If I remember correctly, on one end of the bridge is a sign, or something of the such, that directs people to walk their horses or pay a fine. (Like a dollar, or may 2? It was funny!) It's been 20 years since I was there, so my memory could be off a tic or two.

You are incorrect. Illegal aliens can get food stamps and MEDICAID, amoung other public assistance benefits.

You sir, have been the recipient of incorrect information. See below:

and here:

http://money.cnn.com/2014/11/20/news/economy/immigration-myths/index.html

You may be getting information about SNAP 'qualified aliens':

If you still insist that illegals can get these benefits, feel free to substantiate your information with credible sources.

I can't understand why those of you that think free health care is so wonderful why you don't move to one of the countries that offers it. Bet it wouldn't take long for your to regret your decision. My wife is from N. Ireland and has three brothers and three sisters covered under the British healthcare system. We hear what actually happens there and we want no part of it.

Israel's healthcare system is great, but the price is high (I suppose) To be eligible, one must serve 2 years in Israel's Defense Force. (or what ever it is called...Standing army to me!)

Canadian insurance is vastly different than U.S. insurance. You have socialized medicine, we don't. Surgeons do a lot of elective surgery, for Canadians, here in my area as the wait times, in Canada, for elective procedures, are horrendous and our area is a destination resort type area so they come here.
