It really just depends on the xray operator at the time. If they can't clear what they're looking at in their own mind, they should call for a bag check. There are rules & parameters for this along with constant training but in the end it's a fallible human making the call. Your bag was heavily loaded and all that glass shows up black/blue which could easily obscure just about anything. Sounds like a proper call to me. I worked for them for three years a while back for the healthcare. And TSA has no real interest in drugs.....explosives and weapons are the focus.

I bought a used Tamron 150-600 a while back from the Nikonians forum. After some use I noticed substantial dust accumulation on the elements inside. I called Tamron to see about a cleaning and was quoted $250., which is about what I saved from buying new. They said if I was the original purchaser it would be covered by warranty and be free. I will buy new in the future.

Lots of good info given already. I would consider moving the trip to early/mid July if possible to be sure the road is open. Hopefully you'll have a scope as there will be grizzlys grazing on open hillsides. Above swiftcurrent lodge is a good bet. Cabins there are a good place to spend the night.
The Bison Range is the best tip yet. I lived just 10 mi form there for quite a few years. Great opportunities for up close wildlife.Take the long loop. Stay in the car! Evening is always best but don't go too late as the park closes at dusk. If in need of a place to stay in the area check out the Symes Hotel in the town of Hot Springs. Interesting little hideaway and you can soak in the healing natural springs after a long day of sightseeing. It's a magical part of the country if you get lucky with the weather! Good luck and enjoy!!
