What really matters is: Is the final image what you are trying at achieve? Here is a test I did with my Sony A1 shot with the Sony 200-600mm G, As cameras progress, they improve on the difference between the lowest ISO and the highest. There is a world of difference between the images in my test here and a test I did 10 years ago with my Sony a65. In the film days, your max ISO was about 1000 and it was very grainy and weak color. I would not have been able to get a star shot even close to the one show here.

ISO 80

ISO 2500

ISO 102,400

ISO 2500

nice description of Smith Rock. I visit there often since it is only 15 miles away.

Most of the replies are great advice. Between now and your next trip you might look into buying a used ultra wide angle lens such as the Samyang or (Rokinon) 14mm f2.8 manual lens for FF or a 12mm for crop sensor. They are very reasonably priced around $150. These are manual lenses which is actually the easiest to use for star photography.

I quit using any filter on my Sony 200-600mm. I found that the Polarizer I was using degraded the image.

The broad consensus is to capture in RAW (color) and process digitally, including digital application of color filters, B&W conversion, contrast, etc. Far more control of the final results. Myself, I process the RAW to a finished color image, then apply the B&W conversion and edit that conversion to completion as B&W.

Yes, you have the most control this way. Personally if I am going to shoot in color and then convert, I usually us a polarizer. I have found that using color filters and shooting in color don't have as much effect as just doing it in PP. Now on the other hand. I have a Sony a7ii converted to monochrome. (similar to the Leica Monochrome). When I am shooting with it. I do use color filters. With a monochrome camera, color filters have the same effect as when using B&W film. For those that did not grow up with B&W TV and B&W film...it's a whole different world.

Sony a7ii converted to monochrome, Red filter.

Thanks for announcing the a9iii. The pre-exposure would be nice for birds and creatures. The global shutter would also be nice. I'm sure there are other things that would be nice. If I still did wedding photography then the no limit on flash sync speed would be great. The $6000 is not so nice.

I watched the two promo videos that are on the "Hunts" photo site. Very impressive camera. But way out of my price range. Lots of very nice things but I probably wouldn't use like the 120 fps. But if Santa put one (pre order card) under my Christmas Tree. I would gladly sell my a9 and maybe a1.

I prefer the sharp shot.

I prefer the Sharpe one too.

But, There is a difference between out of focus and soft focus... Check out Clarence White and many other early photographers. I use to own a Mamiya 645 , Soft focus lens. I would use it often on doing portraits, landscapes, and some still life. Just a suggestion for people to try to expand their Photographic Knowledge.
