Just got back from a 3 day trip to Saint Simon's Island, Jekyl Island and Savannah with my wife. I so excited for the opportunities to take such wonderful photos. Everything was planned carefully, so I thought for my equipment. I even took my 35mm Nikon with a 50 mm lens loaded with 100 Ektar. Had extra, spare SD cards, batteries, battery charger, filters, etc. etc.

First thing that happened was that the cover to the battery compartment on the SLR broke. I had to use electrical tape to try and keep it closed. In the humid weather, the tape would not really cling to the camera and keep the compartment closed.

Of course I knew it would be hot and humid but didn't realize how long it would take for my lenses to acclimate and stop fogging up when I took them out of the camera bag. The larger the lens, wide angles, the more glass to fog up.

And it poured on two of the days; not just rain, but rain so hard we couldn't even run from our motel room to the car. So, trying to take the camera out in the wet weather wasn't possible.

Now, if I would have have taken my little Panasonic Lumix that I usually always carry with me, I might have had the opportunity for more photos. Oh, and last week I dropped and broke the screen on my Samsung Edge smartphone, so all I had was my old Blackberry!

I did manage to get some terrific photos during the trip, but next time I will be really prepared.
Food and beverages were good and we had a safe trip.

Welcome to Georgia. If you shoot film, consider a Nikonos next time.

Shot these little jewels in the backyard interested to know if people like these no motion look or prefer some motion?

Truly excellent work! I read that hummers' feathers soak up so much light that you almost always need fill flash. Judging by the dark backgrounds it appears you used flash, right? I look forward to more of your work.

I want to purchase the Nikkor 35mm F1.8 FX lens for my D500 (so I can have an equivalent "nifty-fifty", well, 52.5mm but close enough)--however, I noticed most of Nikon's prime wide angles don't have VR. Will I miss VR; that is, is it as critical for lenses at the 50mm and wider to not have it? Of course, in the film days I shot 35mm without VR or IS and did just fine but I've gotten used to the fact that I have it and now I'm wondering is it as critical as I think it is?

My opinion just go for it. That's a great lens for the price and you'll enjoy it. Not many situations demand VR if you think about it.

Santiago is a major metropolitan city of 7 million people and much like other cities of the
world of that size, exotic foods such that you mentioned are available at a price. The eggs
you will find in our markets, supermarkets and megamarkets, however, are no different than the
mass produced eggs you find in the States.

I know. I was just playing with the imagery.

Did you notice that the OP is from Chile. What he is eating might be what we are raising without knowing it.

I didn't notice that. You don't suppose he was referring to lizard or turtle eggs, do you?

We now raise chickens and expect eggs any day. Our chickens are fed only none GMO feeds, hand cut grasses, fresh leaves from trimmed branches, nothing with steroids, hormones, or antibiotics. Our free range chickens are outside all day long in a fenced area. Most companies that advertise free range eggs come from chickens that never leave a closed building. Ours get as much sun light as they want.
Since I grew up on a farm, I know the difference between what we will get vs what production egg plants produce. There is a difference in taste, consistency, shell thickness, and healthy food. So we will be providing eggs to our family and friends this year from our 35 hens and 8 ducks. If we so chose, we will try for 200 laying birds by next year. So far we have had a lot of people stopping in and asking to buy our eggs when the ladies start laying.

We have free range turkeys around here but I've never found their eggs. You'll notice the OP didn't mention what bird he was talking about.

I am looking to by UV and CP filters. I don't have any ND filters for any of my lenses. That will come later when I'm shooting better.

UV filters are for film. The best filter for digital is no filter unless you're introducing an effect like polarizer

The same reason fishermen buy lures. Different species different lures. For photographers different disciplines different lenses. For me (an avid photographer and fisherman) I have twice the GAS as the normal photographer. And yes I always keep a fishing rig in the car when I am out photographing wildlife cause you never know when you might find a honey hole. My two favorite things to do now that I am retired!

Hopefully the camera gear smells better than the fishing gear.

If your timing is not of the necessity, wait till late October, early November, before going. The color and the ambiance will be worth waiting for the 90 days till...plus, bears are

Bears? Yell and clap your hands loudly. They scatter. Unless they think you have food.

I'll ask about it. This is a guided trip, so it may or may not be on the agenda. On the other hand, there is plenty of free time, so who knows...?

It won't be on the agenda; it's a Mormon sacred site. There's a cemetery on the wagon-rut road leading to it, and it's very curious that almost everyone died on the same day! (Indian raid) I managed to find it on Google Earth just now, but it looks like it's pretty heavily fenced off. Also, some tumble-down buildings are gone. I had an interesting experience in that two-story house. It has an interior stairway with a door at the bottom. I opened the door, focused my lens on the stairway, and c cool breeze blew the door shut - on a 105 degree day. Opened the door, focused, door blew shut. Once more, same result. Finally my wife held the door open and I got the shot. Went outside, and the wind speed was exactly zero. The stairway had been desecrated by graffiti anyway, so I don't know what the ghosts were up to. True story. Those old slides and some 4x5 Ektachromes are around here somewhere.

Count on it!

I did a similar trip in 2012. From that came my opinion that it's darn near impossible to take a bad photograph at Bryce Canyon.

Zion, on the other hand was a real challenge for me then. We're spending two days there this trip, with an expert photographer giving us tips on lighting, shadows, reflections, etc. As I said, I'm jazzed!

Don't miss Grafton, UT right near Zion. Site of an Indian (yeah I'm aware of the PC BS) massacre of the Mormon settlement in 1876 or so. The abandoned buildings are fantastic. It's hard to find and the locals are tight-lipped about it.

Cades Cove is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. The biggest problem there is bear sightings. A black fur ball 100 yds away in tall grass will bring traffic to a complete stop.

Yup, Cades Cove is the winner. The abandoned buildings are especially enticing. Lots of people but they're spread out over a large area. Last time we drove up there the park was closed by some Obama-esque dictatorial nonsense.
