Excellent photos. I like the rounded woven looking plant that seems like a crown of thorns. Too bad the dead stalks around it detract from it's impact.
I can still recognize this as a cicada. So I think you didn't go too far. At first my impression was that it is too tightly framed, but then your treatment probably calls for a frame filled image.
