New thought:
I'll check the battery charge.
Maybe it's too low to fire the flash.
Thank you!

It seems to happen only when I'm photographing at night.
I had the same issue photographing the Tufa at Mono Lake last year.

Thank you for the input.
The flash is the built-in on the camera itself that is sputtering and crackling.

Greetings!
I have a Conon EOS70D and was shooting photos of the moon.
On flash setting (I was experimenting and know that I can't light up the moon with a flash)
the flash fluttered and crackled, but wouldn't fire.
My theory is, this happens because the flash wasn't synchronized the shutter speed and aperture.
Can anyone confirm or dispute my theory?
Any other ideas, please?

Greetings, Thank you for your response! It is the RAW file that is giving me the message. When I go back to the Album file that has the raw image, I see a gray rectangle
with a mountain image outline with a broken line across the middle of it. I keep the raw file on my camera card as well.

I am using Photoshop Elements 12 with Windows 8.
I have noticed that I get one of two messages after editing my Raw files
and saving them as Jpeg.
They are either " Damaged File" or "Fractured File"
Anyone have any idea as to what is going on with the Raw file?

I have a Conon EOS70D, and periodically I will see part of the photo on my LCD screen flash. Usually it's from white to black. ie; The white clouds will flash back and forth from white to black over and over.
Any Canon users out there know why?

what is your camers focusing on the moon or the branches?

I had my aperture set @ 4.6 (I believe)
and was focusing on both. Now that you ask, I should have used my DOF button to make sure that the moon was in focus. Never thought of that. Without the DOF preview, the
moon was in focus. That may be my problem.
