For pity's sake, people. That's a muffler bearing refurbisher from the 1930s. You place the muffler bearing beneath it in a large pan and pop it in a 350 degree oven for about two hours and voila, no more muffler bearing noise when you reinstall it in the muffler. They didn't work all that well however, with many bearings needing to be replaced in any case. They also had a tendency to explode in the oven after about twenty minutes, causing a good many injuries and even some deaths, particularly in mechanics who were taller (go figure). So I wouldn't try to sell it, as you might face heavy liabilities if such an event were to occur. Whenever my people would run across one, they always buried them about two feet down and filled the hole with bull shit and horse pucky.

Linda from Maine, thanks for the quotes. As one who started in B&W back in the 70s and used it as a purely artistic medium for artistic purposes, I found Ben Long's quote succinct and meaningful. The others were also good reminders of what I used to know/feel about B&W.

Gawler, thanks for the very interesting information on these bats. Appreciate it.

Remarkable shots. Great work. Could anyone clarify what's up with the Flying Fox name? Also, what would be the ballpark weight and length of these critters?

You invoked both an emotional and intellectual response, at least in me. Maybe it's because we are both Nikon users named Bill, which I had failed to notice earlier. I believe I felt the images' impact and perceived, if not the particular intention, then at least that there was intention. Hope to see more of your intentions on the hog.

In another post someone mentioned the use of a VPN (Virtual Private Network). This is something I have recently found myself considering. Are there any hoggers who would care to share their experiences here with VPNs, perhaps including recommendations and caveats? Thanks in advance.

This immediately clutched my heart and brought tears to my eyes.

Your bird shots have left me thinking about them longer than most. I like the unusual drama of the dark backgrounds, but thinking also I would like to see a little more detail in those. But I'm feeling uncertain about this. Then I come to the question of how you metered the exposures, particularly the shot of the egret. Curious about the metering pattern you used and your intentions, particularly as this is sooc. All in all, enviable work.

I appreciate learning the correct terms for wildlife or just about anything else that is relevant to the topic. There is no need to call someone a "grammar nazi", which merely displays a contempt for learning, which is the fundamental premise of The Ugly Hedgehog.

Good advice. I learned the hard way. Changing out my 70-300 nikor, I forgot to turn the camera off. When fingers of my right hand accidentally touched the contacts on the camera's lens mount, while at the same time my left hand fingers made contact with the contacts on the lens, while my left arm was moving and the shutter button became depressed by contact with my right thigh, the resulting frantic movements within the lens created a wind that blew my hairpiece out the window. To be honest, I found the experience quite thrilling in the moment. The downside was that since I lived on the 15th floor of my building, it wasn't till months later that I found my toupee blocks away where some kind soul had placed it on a signpost. Since this was a custom - made hairpiece, because of my rather oddly shaped head, it would have been quite expensive to have had it remade. Fortunately, the fellow who had made it was an avid lens man like myself and he accepted my camera and lens as an even trade. Now I can go out in public again during daylight hours but have no camera with which to capture any of that light. I think I'll start saving for a rig that doesn't have interchangeable lenses.

I'm sorry, wbauknight, but my calc says there are 39 shares:

Mother share = 1×
Daughter share = 2x (times 4 daughters) = 8x
Son share = 6x (times 5 sons) = 30x

Therefore, 1+8 +30 = 39 shares in all;
And 1 share = $8000 / 39 = $205.12

Anyone else get 205.12?

I agree with amfoto1. A wife's share is s205.12.

I'm changing my vote from 7 to none. No tank will ever fill completely.

#7 is the only tank with a completely open path.
