I actually had a polarizer filter on for this shot. I shot in RAW format and also added a haze filter in post-processing. I think the impact of the polarizer shows up more in the B&W. Thank you for looking and for your insightful comment.

Portland Head Light, is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The light station sits on a head of land at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor, which is within Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine. WHich do you prefer, color or B&W?

I have been to Portland numerous times, always do some photography while there. The one day I went to the Head Light, it was foggy, but I still got some decent images. Fog tends to keep moving on the coast, so you can still capture images when there is a "hole" in it! Same thing happened one of the times I went to Nubble in York. As long as the weather cooperates, you should be able to get some good photographs. There will be other people there, but patience will make it possible to keep their presence in your images at a minimum. There is not a lot of space to move around the base of the light, which puts a lot of people out of sight behind it! You can take photos from various viewing points on the shore, too. The 18-135 would be good for getting a closer view from a distance.

Don't ignore the Old Port. I like to walk out on a long wharf and take photographs of the port and city. One I got right before sunset that is spectacular! You will find an interesting mix of restaurants and warehouses, working boats, pleasure boats, and ferries. There are even seals that hang around!
There are a lot of shops and restaurants on the land side of the road, making it desirable for those that want to shop and eat. But the look of the restaurants on the wharf side, both on the road and on the wharfs, is much more interesting photographically.

It is hard to "do it all" in one afternoon, but not impossible. Pick your spots and have fun! You may even want to go other places in Maine - lots to see!

Look at my photos page to see some examples. 500px.com/susanfromvermont/galleries

Thak you for the info. We are doing the SE coast of Maine in August and looking forward to some great food and good photography

What exactly does Refurbished mean? Is there a Standard that all refurbished cameras have to meet? Is a refurbished camera from Nikon different from B&H or Adorama or Amazon?

in General Terms, "refurbished" means to be brought back to near new or new condition with regards to the operation of the lens. A refurbed lens may show slight external barrel wear but operationally it should be like new. This being said, not all third-party companies refurb in the same way, or to the same extent. If you buy refurbed lenses from the lens manufacturer they all meet top standards and will guarantee operation and satisfaction. There are some third party suppliers who also do excellent refurbishment on lenses. When buying from these companies it is good to check the customer comments and ratings. Good Luck.

Yesterday, I got some great advice on SD cards for my SX50 while traveling abroad. I'd probably prefer the Sony for traveling (and quality) if I could find one lens with a range similar to my Nikon lens (28-300 for example). Does Sony have an e-mount with a wide range? I don't want to change lenses. I'm tempted to just rely on my Nikon A900. Oh well, I've got some time to figure it all out. Maybe one of you will help make up my mind. Thanks for your input in advance.

I highly recommend the Sony E mount lens. It is highly rated and here is the one I bought: Sony E 55-210mm f4.5-6.3 OSS Lens 55-210/4.5-6.3 SEL55210 E-Mount USN-07-7990-3 2931105 1 USD $181.00
I bought it at usedphotopro.com, a division of Roberts Camera. They have great deals on used equipment. They may still have another available. The quality rating on mine was Excellent and it was as advertised.

I would love to watch you work for free rather than your paycheck!

It's obvious you missed my point. I am not advocating working for free. I was referencing playing for the joy of the game without a paycheck on the line. All these kids are hoping for a college or pro scout to like them but at this point (14 to 16 years old) they play with genuine exuberance and sportsmanship. By the way, I do work for free. I regularly donate my photography services to charitable organizations to help them in their promotional fund drives or to make the public more aware. Thank you for looking at my pictures and your comment.

We attended the youth National baseball championships in North Georgia to watch my wife's cousin's team play. We saw two of the games and they won both. At this moment they are tied for 1st place in their 10 team pool. These are a few of the shots I took for the team to distribute to the parents and other family members. It was great watching these amazing young athletes playing for the love of the game rather than for big paychecks.

The figurine was on a base, which I removed via photoshop. It was quite safe. Yes, the male dancer was clear glass and the incandescent light source was directly overhead. I corrected the white balance to add a bit more blue to the image, which I felt was how it llooked in real life.
