Yes I realize brass filter mounts are likely the "best" solution... However I have many aluminum filters which have never had galling problems on newer "composite" lenses... this issue has only become front and center with metal lens filter threads. After reading several rather lengthy photo forum threads on this subject there was no general consensuses among posters, though all seem to agree that this is a frequent problem.

Reason for this query? I've recently obtained some pristine pro glass from the 80's and 90's which are entirely metal included the filter threads. While I have no problem shooting sans filters in the studio it is on location this becomes more worrisome... Unless I find a viable solution I'll just go with a lens hood and be very careful...

Thanks in advance to those who may have have solved this challenge...
Otherwise I may be ponying up for 77mm B&W brass filter mounts.
Has anyone had positive experience with this B&W filter?

Be careful applying lubes to filter/lens threads. The worst would be WD or other silicone-based lubes. Silicone lubes CAN'T be removed with readily available solvents like alcohol, acetone, mineral spirits, etc. If you get it on the lens or filter glass, it is curtains. Very difficult to remove and increased chance of scratching given that one would have to rub and rub with clean, soft cloth to remove.

I have two proven solutions that i have used many times over the years:
1) use a high-grade dry graphite. I find the best is Kadee brand. This is used by model railroaders. You'll have to be very careful to use a tiny amount, work it in and then clean the glass. it won't stick to the glass but can present as particles.

2) This is the one that i prefer. I use the tiniest amount of bees wax. A good (cheaper) substitute is toilet bowl wax. Very cheap. Good for lots of applications and works very well. Use the tiniest amount on the end of a toothpick. Apply spots to four quadrants, mate the filter and work it in. ONLY THE TINIEST AMOUNT IS NEEDED. Otherwise, you'll have a mess on your hands. Wipe off any excess doing whatever you can to keep it or the dirty rag from contacting glass.

BTW, i use this same wax of cheapy LED flashlights. It makes those threads smooth as silk and no galling. I have used a couple of those lights for years now and no need for periodic lubrication. Original dab still great.

there's no doubt that the climate is warming...sloooooowly...as it should in an interglacial period (that's the span between ice ages). The problem, though, is that there is no proof the warming is being accelerated by man. There is no clear unequivocal data showing man or animal is the problem. Don't be manipulated by climate radicals. Just be a good steward of the environment. Stop the panicking and scaring of the children. My grandchildren have been taught in school that the world will soon be uninhabitable. Terrible thing to scare a child. NOTHING we do will reverse global warming. It will just happen.

i love mine. Carry it on my belt with the kit 15-45 lens. i always have my 5DMkIII with 100-400 lens. Lethal combination since my focus is wildlife. Covers all ranges without the need to change lenses. Also...if anything happens to my 5D, i can put the 100-400 on the M50 with use of the adapter. Love the camera. Have had it 1.5 yrs now. Reasonable battery life (unlike my wife's Sony 6500). Happy customer.

Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper said on Sunday that he never saw any specific piece of evidence that Iran was planning an attack on four American Embassies, as President Trump had claimed last week as a justification for the strike on an Iranian general that sent the United States and Iran to the brink of war.

I have an Irani friend, now a 25 year citizen of the US, who says the average citizen in Iran is privately celebrating the demise of Solemani. Solemani, when not engaged in foreign terrorism, was known for terrorizing, torturing Iranians in Iran. Most people were frightened of him and glad to have him gone. Viva Trump...and screw the spin masters that want to make it look like Trump did something bad. I trust those that put Trump onto to this bastard and urged him for permission to take him out.

As an indirect result of the trump execution of Soleimani 176 people died ... It would not have happened without Trump's rash act.

In one of the interviews on MSNBC, Trump claimed that Soleimani had the blood of many Iranians on his hands? I have often joked that young Bush meant to attack Iran but got confused and said Iraq and once said the ball was rolling. Not true of course, and the war was declared won in a month on the Aircraft Carrier... that was 18 y ago and we are still fighting.

Morals, ethics, and power... OK, but the big thing is Money and perhaps the abstract thing called human lives. The USSR was comprised of many countries, but because of the arms race, they fell apart. We, the USA must think we are immune to bankruptcy... both monetarily and reliance and admiration by the rest of the world.

To me, the assassination of Soleimani was simply a "look I am a tough guy" diversion from the impeachment. Soleimani was just one of many bad guys in the world... Trump exchanges "love letters" with Kim Jong-il!! Really? If Doc Duvalier were alive he would be a dinner guest. Trump admires dictators who are ruthless and is not looking out for the interests of the USA.

No, I am not a wild liberal and voted for [classic] Republicans about half the time. I am in favor of pulling back the expense of worldwide bases that stir hate. The money can be will spent modernizing the USA... Clean energy using Thorium Molten Salt Reactors invented by us in the 1950-60s successfully run for 5 years. You mean like Brennan and how he pushed Bush to attack Iraq? Potus has good reason to be skeptical of the intelligence community at large. Bad intel. Political motivations working against him. They did nothing in stopping the hacking by Russia and others prior to the election, then the pols have the gall to blame Trump for colluding. Obama knew the Russians were hacking. Where was the intelligence community? Where was the FBI? What motivation did they have for doing nothing when they knew hacking was going on? Did they think it would benefit hrc? I'm not promoting such a conspiracy, but suspect there was some motivation for doing nothing.

As stated previously, the intel community can't be wholly trusted. Some within have become political serving their person needs or a master's. Lousy situation.

What kind of idiots follow this stuff. BIG NEWS! A politician caught in a lie!!!! Who ever heard of such a thing!!!!

Some people really need to get a life. Trump has his faults for sure, but he has proven an able administrator that has kept to campaign promises. Huff Post is trash journalism. Not because they pick on POTUS, but because, like most publications these days, they are biased, editorialize at every chance rather than report the news. Following this trash is sick.

Grasslands birds-53%.The good news is that a few groups are doing well; waterfowl+50%, raptors+200%, turkeys+200% and they talk about the reasons - much of it is habitat conservation work and what can be done that would benefit the other species as they point out that even if 30% of North American birds are lost there are still 70% left to spur a recovery if conversation measures can be implemented. To you it is not presidential or proper. My problem with all of this is that once President Trump came to office things in my community changed drastically fir the better, we are so much better off than under any of the last several administrations it is amazing. President Trump actively supports America first, our sovereignty as a country, our individual rights and freedoms, and our right to express our ideas and beliefs as the constitution guarantees.
This president delivers what he promised in the light of outright revolution from the left.
The socialist Democrats of America want to control your money, your land, your home, your power, your water, your food, your education and your health care. They want to control what you do, where you live, where you work, what you drive and what you wear. They even want to control your news and your entertainment. They have almost succeeded on all fronts, and the left leaning folks applaud their progress to destroy this nation and it's culture.
President Trump is the first president in many years to openly oppose these leftists goals, and because of this I don't care what he says, or how he says it to accomplish what he and many Americans stand for.
I apologize for sometimes lashing out due to an overload of lies and partial truths from the left. Last night was a good example of this untold behavior.

Personally, Trump was not my choice of the GOP candidates and I am not a fan of his personal life or his style in general. Frankly (not Fwrankie...haha), I would take someone much worse than he if he were an able exec with a good long term vision of our country, could disrupt corrupt DC and stuck to the Constitution the way our president does. I applaud Trump for getting so much accomplished in the face of incredible adversity for 3 years. The swamp has to be drained, that's why so many are dead set against him. anything else they say about him is nothing but smokescreen. They know he is disrupting status quo in Washington and he's not afraid to do it. So many in DC are fighting for their continued existence as swamp creatures. That's the real story. Nothing more. Nothing less. If anyone doesn't see that, they are first class dopes; Kool-Aid drinkers of the first order.

Although i am of that vintage, our school system never did that (in a city of 60K). In the case of that time, the threat was real and, as you may know, the world was closer to nuclear holocaust than ever before. I think there is a big difference then and now. The now is that some are going around telling kids the world will end when there is no real data. Just not real. I agree the earth is warming AGAIN. It has happened many times over the millennia. We are in an inter-glacial period, still coming out of an ice age. Now, back to the same old cycle.

Most wind turbines I've seen did not move fast enough to be an issue, plus there just aren't that many. It is well known that wind turbines take a toll on birds. I'm not saying they are causing a bird decline, but you never hear about the crews that are paid to remove the dead birds from beneath the towers; in some places, everyday and large amounts, too.

Not sure what's going on. The types of pesticides being used today seem to be less detrimental than DDT of the past. Animal extinctions don't bother me in one sense. Sure, i would miss birds and hope we are not causing it, but extinctions occur all the time in nature. That's why we no longer have dire wolves, smilodons, giant sloths, uintatheria, T-Rex, etc., etc. Sometimes i wonder if they are just changing ranges and not being counted anymore in a particular area. When i was a kid, i never saw Northern Cardinals in MA. Now, so common. Same with Turkey Vultures. Started seeing them in central MA in mid-70s. Now so common throughout the state and northwards. Sometimes one species will displace another in a particular habitat.

So far, there are no postulations about bird decline. I hear some say climate change, but..phooey. If too warm somewhere, they move or learn to accommodate. Sometimes long learning curve, but like anything in nature, they tend to endure.

I am bombarded with calls for donations to MA Audubon, Nat'l Audubon, W. Wildlife Fed., Cornell. ten of so requests per day. Not sure where the money goes or how birds are being saved. I know some goes to serious research, but i think most doesnt. I've supported these orgs for years, but wondering if i still should.
