I certainly understand her preference...and agree. Did you try to crop closer so the ball of the sun in not in the shot, just the rays? I wanted to try it but PS won't open your jpg (may be a UHH problem.)

I'll try that, thanks. When I posted the images it didn't have the option to allow downloads. I allowed it to save the images.

I like the second one but,
To me she blends in with the background, I would rather be able to see more of her.
So as for myself I would bring her in closer, fill the frame more with her rather than all the other stuff, after all the photo is about her....

Thank you, I'll try it.

I remember going to a local presentation from a pro photog. He said, "I take two shots, one for me, and one for the client. And the client never likes what I like, but the client pays the bills."

Great words, Thanks

I love the one YOU took. It's a GREAT shot! I feel for you but at least you'll get to spend some time together making her selections.

THANK YOU!!!

You may want to look into the Orton Effect, which imposes a beautiful dreamy "glow" while retaining fine details. It just might be to her liking. (and yours)

There are many variations - the results are fully adjustable. If you find a technique you like, then you can easily create an action so that you can repeat it on other images if you need to.

Thank you, I'm moving to the computer, so I can watch this.

Beautiful, but she has no money, that's why Grandma did it for free. My first, and last, venture into photographing people. It's not worth the stress or headache.

I agree with your assessment, in the first shot your granddaughter is definitely the subject. My opinion is that in the second image she is "swallowed up" in the background and so is not as much the subject. I would recommend that you select her image in the second shot using about 15 px of feathering. Then brighten her image and add just a bit of contrast. Invert the selection and add some Gaussian blur to put the background just out of focus. Hopefully that will make her image stand out and the background be less likely to compete with her image.

Just my opinion but why are you shooting into the sun? I to like her choice. She is the focal point of the photo, not that big burning ball of light in the sky. I would personally prefer more light directly on her, everything else is just background.

It was her choice to have the setting sun behind her. She had gone to Pinterest and other sites for maternity shots, to get ideas. It seems to be the trend. As someone who normally shoots landscapes, I had problems with the idea myself.

You love your GD so you want to see the face you watched grow up. She likes the profile shot, which is not surprising.

A lot of people don't like how they think they look in a picture and profile shots hides what she may think are her less then best features.

More important perhaps is the shot she likes puts emphasis on the baby bump and that is what she cares about right now. And that is the shot that tells the best story.

Thank you, I really appreciate your view.

Wtf is IG editor? Frankly, I do not care for either image because the backlighting is extremely harsh on the subject. A slightly soft-focused (an effect available in numerous post-processing apps) front-lit shot would be 1000% better. /Ralph

I believe IG is Instagram. I really don't know either. As far as the shot being front lit, I agree. However, that wasn't how she wanted it.

Maybe you can suggest she take your pictures and edit the ones she like in IG editor. This way she can make them to her liking. Just let her know you will not be offended by her edits of your shots. Just a sugguestion

I have already told her that the shots are hers, she can do with them as she likes. However, I have them all in RAW format, so we are going to go through them with Lightroom. I guess what I want to know, is why she, and it seems others, like the version she put together better? It's soft, and the sun looks blown out.

I was asked by my granddaughter to take some maternity photos of both her, and her family. First off, I am not a "people photographer", my area of comfort is landscape photography. That said, I agreed to do her maternity shoot, which she chose the time of day, golden hour, and location. She also sent me a link to several shots that she liked, which were all backlit with the sun. The day after our photo shoot, I started doing some editing, and I was very pleased with one particular photo, which I promptly sent to her. Here is where the "problem" arises, she doesn't want to hurt my feelings, but she doesn't like it. She feels it's too sharp, she wants a "softer" look. (Now you know why I won't do "people shots") So, we are meeting on Thursday to go through ALL 300 photos to see if I can use PP to make them more to her liking. She chose a very similar shot to mine, and did something with IG editor, and is happy with it. I'll post both shots, and perhaps someone can tell me where I went wrong.

This is the shot I liked

This is the shot she prefers

If you choose to stay with the Canon format, the Canon 80D is also a nice camera. It is also sold at Costco, and once you get familiar with the "touch screen" for settings, you'll wonder how you ever did without it. I have a friend who just upgraded to the new Canon 5D Mark IV (which is a beautiful full frame, but lots of $$$ more), and it has the touch screen, she is so over the moon with it, she said she would never go back to dials. (Neither would I :-) )

I am selling my Canon 70-300 f4.5-6L IS USM lens. It is in excellent condition, no scratches, mold, mildew, etc.

I do not have the case that is listed on the box, however, I will include the mounting ring, that was not included in the box. The mounting ring sells new, for $179.00 at B&H.

I am asking $900.00 and you pay shipping.
