In all my years of feeding the birds, I never before had the Northern Mockingbird make a visit. I have always had them in the yard but never at the feeders. I once watched a Mockingbird spend an entire afternoon attacking his own image in my car mirror. Please view in DOWNLOAD mode!

All shot with Canon 70D with Canon 400mm f/5.6 lens.

Have a nice weekend!

Lovey series. The second shot is my favorite!

Ever go on a photo trip, holiday, or out for the day shooting. Here it is. The timing is right, you are driving along. But you just don't press on the silly brake and bring the vehicle to a stop so you can shoot a shot. Oh yes. You are laughing right now. I can here it... You are saying, "Yup Wilafred, he is right on the mark!"

Well I told myself I wasn't going to do this on this latest trip. Here are a few shots from the side of the road. Cars, trucks and noisy vehicles of all types rumbling by, but I took them anyway. Some were even taken alongside the dirt road I was cruz'n.

Hope you enjoy them.

Hi Folks, this is a shot of last nights sunset along the banks of the Ohio River at Evansville Indiana. It was a very colorful one and I was fortune that a barge was passing by at the time. Now, the foreground water looks a bit noisy and this maybe due to the fact that it was very windy and the water was extremely choppy. The reason the barge powerboat looks a bit purple is due to the purple lights that they had turned on. The Ohio river makes a big horseshoe bend at Evansville. This is looking West and you can see the river bending around to the left in the distance. It flows into the Mississippi about 100 miles downstream (as the crow flies) from here. Not a perfect shot, but still a nice evening scene. Thanks for looking folks.

The shutter fires before focus lock

Hi George,

I've not had that experience so I'm not sure what the cause might be. I'm sure I must have pressed the shutter harder than I intended too on some occasion but nothing that would qualify as a recurrent mechanical problem. Perhaps you're correct in thinking it might have something to do with the camera being refurbished. Don't know, really.

I've always had good experiences whenever I've contacted Canon USA tech support. If you decide to call them please let me know what you find out. I'm always interested in the resolution of these sorts of things!

Tony I have a question you might be able to answer. About three months ago I bought a refurbished SX59 HS from Canon to use for it's long reach since I don't have a long lens for either of my dslr's. My discomfort with the SX50 is a very sensitive shutter when I try to 1/2 press and wait for the camera to focus. Is this common to this camera or might I have gotten a bad refurbished model?

Hello 2daysoldrndirt,

Other than the occasional instances when I was dealing with low-light conditions and the camera was taking a few seconds in an attempt to lock focus I haven't experienced any problems when 1/2 pressing the shutter of my previous or current SX50. Could you please elaborate on what you mean by "sensitive" shutter. Does this mean that when you attempt to ONLY 1/2 press the shutter the camera takes the picture before you're ready to FULLY press the shutter. So, the camera hasn't provided enough time to properly lock focus?

Or, when you 1/2 press the shutter you have to wait a long time for the camera to lock focus?

Thanks,

Tony

Thanks everyone,

For taking the time to look and especially to comment. Here's a few more photos along with a link to my recently revised "Canon SX50 Hints & Tips" page on my photography website, which explains how I use my SX50.

Best regards,

I'll will not be able to use my SX50 to get shots of these birds but will try it on some flowers. I've traveled to many interesting places by plane and car but several issues have brought that to a halt. Thank you very much. The SX50 does a very fine job with flowers!

Tony I would suggest that what ever camera you used you would produce brilliant pictures, this set being a prime example, and while I am and have always been an avid Canon user I honestly believe they will only produce this quality of work in the hands of a very good photographer,

Geoff

Thank you for your wonderful comments. They mean quite a lot to me.

These are stunning as usual. I'm tempted to purchase the sx50 but I'm wondering if I could get the same (or close) results. I cannot afford Photoshop. I would have to rely on Zoombrowzer, Photo Gallery and Elements 10. What do you think my chances are of getting these results?

Hi cameranut,

Additionally, the SX50 comes with an editing program called "Digital Photo Professional" so along with the other products you've mentioned such as Photoshop Elements 10 you should have enough software to post-process with. I use Photoshop Elements 12 for my post-processing. I'm not familiar with Zoombrowser or Photo Gallery. I often browse the Topaz Labs website to see when their products go on sale and this is how I purchased their DeNoise software, which is excellent!

The SX50 along with even more recent point-and-shoot camera releases all have the potential to produce excellent results with a little practice. I simply discovered an area of photography I found exciting, which is mainly capturing portrait style images of birds and wildlife. That made the next series of decisions that much easier. I scouted locations that would give me the best opportunities to get relatively close to my subjects because I wanted to capture interesting detail. Especially eye detail. That led me to the SX50 because I knew the 1200mm equivalent zoom would easily allow me to "fill the frame" with the subject without the need to crop the image. I practiced and developed strategies that allowed me to capture the types of images I wanted by experimenting with various camera settings and techniques in the field until I consistently got the results I desired. I learned to capture good "foundation images" as I call them, to work with during post-processing. Having a clear goal in mind whenever I use any of my cameras makes it possible to achieve consistent, predictable results. I also remind myself daily that the reason I photograph birds and wildlife in the first place is because it's such an incredible honor to be in the presence of these living works of art! In my photographs I want to see the beauty of the bird and not simply pixels!
