It means Nikon gear is still the very best but not enough people know it due to Canon having better advertising.

Good morning Dennis, this is not directed at you so much, but all of this talk is kind of funny to me. So much talk about X,Y & Z cameras, all I care about is the finished product and be darned if I'm going to spend half a day with a loupe trying to figure what brand was used to take a picture. I've used and owned almost every brand out there since I first started out with Barnie Rubble back in 1954. With each new camera there was something new to learn, each new camera was going to make me a better photographer. Well I soon learned that it's not the camera but what you learn to do with the tools that you have. True better gear does help and yes Canon does a great job of advertising but once you learn (master) the ins and outs of different brands they all do a splendid job. Boils down to preferences. Education in photography goes a long way too, formal and on the job. When I made the switch to digital I had two camera systems set up, Nikon for sports and wildlife and Hasselblad's for my serious work. I made my decision on a new system based on the availability of the different focal length lenses. I will say that there hasn't been a camera that I haven't enjoyed using. The best were not X Y or Z but 4X5's.

So what you are saying is I'm a tasteful regular person. Not sure what you mean about the wannabes. Are they the folks who shoot Pentax?

No, Hasselblad's, and still buying film.

I have read that you should address noise first otherwise you sharpen the noose making it more difficult to remove. Is this correct?

Yes, once you sharpen the noise it's more difficult to reduce it. Sometimes all you can do is to reduce the noise depending on the shot and not eliminate noise completely or you will have a soft image.

I use High Pass Sharpening in Corel Paintshop Pro and/or Lightroom. My settings are, radius - 7, strength - 70, blend mode - hard light. Blend mode depends on the photo, if the photos were taken inside and are of faces and/or groups of people I will use a soft light.

As to radius, is that .7 or 7?

I’ve been experimenting with long lens portraiture recently; I’m finding it interesting and challenging. Two weeks ago, I decided to use a long lens to shoot part of a Client Black & White Portrait Commission, in hopes that would be acceptable.

Fortunately, my Client really liked the effect. I used a Canon 5D Mkiv and mostly the 200-400mm end of an EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM. This combo is nice and light for the handheld “natural light dance”; I tend to move around a LOT when working with natural light and a tripod/monopod would just be a hindrance. I will also try the EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM next time I have an opportunity; I will share how that works out for me (it’s a little heavier, but still very usable handheld). I’m really enjoying this long lens portraiture experimentation; wondering if others here have tried this approach?

Here’s one example, a 241mm portrait currently being processed from the series (with the Clients permission); the Series Title is “L'assignation; Parc des Espions”.

Beautiful shot! As for using the 600mm f/4.0 hand held, I must be a wimp because I need a tripod. I use that lens all the time but off a bean bag or tripod for BIF and wildlife. BTW, I think your use of B&W really makes that shot. Would like to see some more with the 600mm. Thanks

Campus Camera in Kent Ohio is 1 hour and 17 minutes away from you. That is a half hour closer than I am. They are a great store with a lot of knowledge. Their number is (330) 678-1297
DODD camera in Akron is just an hour away. Their number is (330) 873-1700

With all the bad news it's nice to see someone here post a positive reply with pertinent info, Thanks!

I found this article useful, as well as the other color management articles on the same website https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/monitor-calibration.htm

To my mind, a certain shade, say green, is represented in the file by a set of numbers that the software and monitor has to then interpret to display. If my monitor shows me a certain green but yours shows a slightly different green for that same number, the picture might not look how I intended it to you. Calibration applies a standard for that green and tries to adjust the monitor to get as close to the standard as possible so if we both have calibrated monitors the green should be close to the same on both. Print as I understand it goes farther because you then also use a printer and paper profile to soft proof to see how the printer will render that green.

Please remember one thing, you should be calibrating your monitor for you for either printing yourself or to insure that you get correct color prints back from a lab. Your monitor may be right on but if I don't calibrate mine then who am I to say that your colors are off? I spent about a full month working with the professional lab that's been doing all my printing for over 35 years to make sure that we were on the same page, well worth the effort too. When I calibrate my monitor which I do every month I seldom see a radical change between the before and after shot. The shots you put up don't really reflect the result of doing a calibration, there were other adjustments made.

Personally I have a Canon R, but I also own several Canon EF L lenses and Sigma EF Art lenses. What I have observed from Canon is that they are rolling out some significant RF lenses that are optically superior to their EF counterparts however at the same time the Canon R has not had near the success that the 5DMkIV has enjoyed, already Canon has dropped the price of the R in what I can only assume is an effort to attract more sales.

The problems I see are several, one is that many photographers are just not ready to make the move to mirrorless especially those who shoot sports action or action in nature because of the focus tracking and momentary loss of the EVF during shooting. The R is not considered to be a professional level camera because of a few missing features such as a second card slot and dials. And lastly the expense of the new RF line, so far only one lens has been produced in the $500 range, one in the $1000 range, and the others are between $2000 and $3000 and we are not even talking about their big Whites yet as they have not been yet produced and probably will be the last lenses they produce in that line because of the tracking problems.

I guess my question is that with so much emphasis being placed on the RF lenses, where does that leave the Canon faithful who are dedicated to their DSLRs?
Personally I have a Canon R, but I also own severa... (show quote)

Damn good question! I plan on buying one more Canon lens and will have all the bases covered. At my age my gear will outlast me. I switched from Nikon to Canon when I moved to digital. I feel that Sony has a head start (mirrorless) on all others and if I did make a change it would most likely be to Sony. Sony already has a "big white" 600mm f.4.0. I don't like the idea of having to use an adapter to be able to use the Canon lenses that I now own. Canon is moving ahead with the wave of new mirrorless lenses and could alienate a strong following if they don't pay attention to what got them to where they are today. I understand where they're going but unless they come up with a strong pro body and new technologies to overcome some of the short comings of mirrorless they may have entered a race they can not win.

Thanks for the correction, haven't had my first cup of coffee yet, still early on this side.

Anyone seeing a problem with either should perhaps not be driving at all.

Canon has done a pretty good job with the 1DXMK2 in regards to shooting video. You can pull a frame at 6 megapixels and print a very well defined and sharp image. Very good point brought out that in days of old still photographers were required to shoot all of the advertising posters for the movies. Using IS (image stabilization) and shooting BIF at 14 FPS off a video head works for me. I don't feel short changed at all. My keeper rate isn't at 98% that is claimed by some but is still fun and challenging. If it was that easy then everyone would be doing it.
