Thanx a lot for your response. You are obviously very knowledgeable and I appreciate your input. In your opinion would the 16” with the M1 chip, 16 gig unified ram and 1 TB SSD drive be sufficient for me? I use LR CC, photoshop, luminar and Topaz, also some video editing. Would there be a noticeable difference if I got the 32 gig of ram? TIA

Hi Brian, I just got the 14" M1 Pro with 16gb memory and 1tb ssd. My use is pretty much the same as yours. There are no memory issues at 16gb with multiple files open in Lightroom and photoshop, creating HDR's or stacks, big psd files with many layers, etc. The computer is fast and a pleasure to use. In reality the processor is more than I can really use but I like it. Build quality is great, the speakers are pretty impressive too!

I replaced my old late 2010 MacBook Pro 15" with this. I have a late 2015 27" iMac with 32gb memory and a 1tb ssd, the new laptop runs circles around it. I am going to probably retire the iMac and just set up a dock for the new laptop to connect to keyboard mouse, Wacom tablet and a monitor or two.

Then it will be my only computer (well maybe, lol). I have 15tb of network storage that I use for my photos.

I went with the 14" for ease of travel, a little bit lighter.

That’s why we have a gas fireplace on both levels, usually for ambiance but are life savers when the furnace isn’t working. Good to have spare heating sources.

We have two Ecovac Deebots, one is more full featured than the other(full mapping and smarter), both can be controlled by wifi device (your phone, iPad, etc). They do a good job but not as good as the Dyson regular vacuum. So once every couple months we do a Dyson vacuuming. Switch from carpet to bare floors is no problem, stairs are no problem, overall very happy with them. We have two because we have two floors. I think they are probably only getting better and better. Ours are 10 years old, still on the original battery.

Don’t know why the op is worried about macs, he just upgraded his machine to windows 11. Everyone with macs knows that the new m1s will have features not available to intell chip based systems. Not a big deal, I have parts on my windows computer that won’t be supported by version 11, no problems with that and when my new m1 pro arrives all the features of Monterey will work on it, super and my older macs will just keep chugging along.

I really like using the Blue Frog filters. Customer service is great. I have been watching to see others that use the filters and this came up in my search so I thought I could help if anyone still saw this

Thanks Joe

I was looking at their website and it is a pretty amazing price for filters. Just have to check out their shipping to Canada.

hi Joe and welcome to the forum, I noticed you have just joined and made this post on a thread that is a year old. Just wondering how this thread caught your attention.

The filters look like a good option but when I looked at the site the address they have is a UPS store mail box.

I would expect a scanner to scan without needing ink. Requiring ink was a conscious decision on the part of Canon. Why? $$$

and if you bought a scanner it would but you aren't buying a scanner you are buying printer that has added features.

sorry but I disagree with your take on this, I have a scanner made by Canon and it scans but that is all it does, I have printers that have scanning functions, I always have ink in them so I have no idea if they scan without ink, their main function is to print that is why you buy them, if I only wanted to scan I wouldn't buy a printer 3 in 1.

on top of that the 3 in ones copy as well which is to print so that would need ink, 2 out of three aint bad

Bill, I appreciate your devotion to Apple products - it’s well known, and I expected your reply. I hope we can have a friendly technical debate on the merits of Apple (and it’s higher price) without impacting our online friendship.

Regarding 400 MB/sec memory bandwidth, that may sound fast, but in fact compared to DDR4 2133 (commonly in use in all modern PCs that have not yet migrated to the faster DDR5 memory), it’s not even in the league. The slowest DDR4 2133 is spec’d at 17 GBytes/second. And unified memory is not necessarily an advantage. What it means is that the GPU cores must share memory (and memory BW) with the CPU - not a performance enhancer. When a PC transfers data from the CPU to a separate GPU, it’s transferred over the PCIe bus, which is many times faster than the 400 MByte memory BW you mentioned and GPU memory does not detract from CPU memory. I’d also add that if you look at actual RISC memory utilization, taking for example the best known of the RISC CPUs, the latest generation SPARC, they specify similar amounts of memory as CISC CPUs. I note that Apple is also realizing the limitations of the original M1 with a max of non upgradable 16 GB and is now offering 32 and 64GB on it’s new faster machines which exemplifies exactly my point - that RISC CPUs and unified CPU/GPU architecture do not equate to very different memory usage from CISC CPUs and separate GPUs.

Again, nice machines and a good choice if you’re committed to/prefer Mac OS, but there is a high price to be paid for closed system computing.

Unfortunately somebody has a typo somewhere here, the memory bandwidth is not 400 MB/sec it is 400 GB/sec which is why the performance of the unified memory works and works very quickly. The 400 GB is for the M1 Max processor and the M1 Pro has 200 GB/sec. The reason as I understand it is the additional memory capabilities are to drive those professional programs like video production.

As to price comparisons, any high end PC laptop that would match these speeds and throughput would cost at least as much money. I went shopping last year and was going to switch then realized there was no saving from the cost of a Mac so I waited for version 2 of the Apple silicon.

I agree with Bill (obviously) and think that Apple is moving the industry forward. What Intel and AMD do in the future will be interesting to watch too. I don't know what DDR5 bus speeds are but it will have to be a huge increment over DDR4 to get even to the first threshold of the M1 Pro.

All good I love all my computers and cannot wait for my new MacBook Pro.

The printer at the heart of this "lawsuit" is a less than $100 at Walmart where the guy purchased it and who would have thought that printers need ink to operate. Yes scan and fax don't use ink but it is bundled package. What these stupid lawsuits will cause is makers to make separate devices for each function and sell you three instead of one. The ink for this printer is $15 for the black and $20 for the colour cartridge.

And somehow this is worthy of a $5 million dollar lawsuit plus all the associated costs to defend and try it!

what a waste of court time

I too watched the release and actually was happily surprised at the amount of power the new chips have. I will be ordering a 14" with the M1 Pro 16 GB memory and 1TB SSD. I do very little video but lots of large photo files and this configuration should fit my needs with power to spare for quite a few years. Going with the 14 inch over the 13 inch for the Pro chip the extra ports and ability to connect two monitors.

My son has an Air with 8GB and the M1 chip and says it is leaps and bounds over his other laptops.

The way the unified memory is used and the speed at which it is accessed is very amazing.

Huge step up for me from my iMac 27 (2015) and my old 2010 and 2011 Macbook Pros that are still chugging along.

Did you purchase your iMac with 32gb or did you upgrade from std 8gb? If you upgraded, did you have Apple install it for you? I have a 21" inch iMac, and I've watched a YouTube on how to install the upgrade from 8gb to either 16 or 32gb and you had to take the entire computer apart. It wasn't like the 27" model where you just open a back panel. Just curious.

Hi Bob, I upgraded the memory myself, the 27in has access on the back to do that, I removed the 8gb that came with it (2 x 4gb modules) and put in 4 x 8gb modules (Crucial brand) when I first got the iMac in Dec 2015. I put up with the fusion drive until last year and then had a shop replace it with a 1tb ssd. Made quite a difference.

Then bought a second iMac the next year and added the 8gb of Apple ram to it so it has 16gb of ram. Sadly, that one had the 1tb fusion drive and it is slow.

Sorry I don't really know much about the 21inch and its memory replacement. Good Luck.

Unfortunately if the 1tb drive is the fusion drive it is notoriously slow along with only 8gb of memory as has been pointed out that is a problem as well. I have a 2017 iMac and run 32gb of memory and had the fusion drive replaced with a ssd drive. I am waiting for the release of the MacBook Pro 14 inch with the new M chip which will be much quicker. Hopefully will be announced later this month

I guess I am the only one who had a problem. After upgrading to Big Sur on a Macbook Pro, my Canon PIXMA Pro 9500 MK II could not be recognized and used. Neither Apple or Canon is willing to establish a driver or compatibility with AirPrint so that the printer, which produces really good prints for my use, can be used.

I have a PC on Windows 10 that recognizes the 9500 MK II and does print using the latest LRC and PS versions.

I am trying to figure out how I can edit on the Macbook Pro using LRC and PS and then printing that same image using the Windows 10 PC that has LRC and PS installed.

Anyone know how I could do that? Anyone have a better idea, other than use a different printer?

Well it’s not seamless but you could just save the file on a thumb drive and then load it onto the Windows machine import it into LRC and print it. I think either platform will read the files

So, if your car gets marked and you go to another location,
your car has already been marked?????? Unless each officer would use a different color or mark style.

no it hasn't, the chalk comes off in a few revolutions of your tire. people used to see their car get marked then go out and drive around the block while a relative stood in the parking spot and then park right back in the same spot. others would come out of their houses and wash all the chalk marks off. The smart officers would then chalk and place a stone on top of the wheel, when they came back 3 hours and 15 minutes later if the chalk mark was gone but the stone was still there they would write the ticket.

it really is a big game by the cities that have no parking for all the houses that they have. then the cities went to permit parking, basically renting the homeowner a spot on the street. the same cities made it illegal to park on your front yard, go figure.

between my formative years of 18 and 21, I chalked thousands of cars and wrote thousands of parking tickets because that was my job as a Police Cadet.

Frankly the court ruling has just removed the municipalities ability to enforce any timed parking other than on a meter, get ready for parking meters or those horrible little pay parking machines on your residential streets

this is a municipal taxing scheme, always was, always will be and they have no intention of giving up revenue.
