Turns out I did not purchase the lens from Samy's. A UHH member was selling a copy of the lens as mint and the Samy's copy has some issues so I went with the private sale. Going forward I will not have any hesitation dealing with Samy's and appreciate all the feedback.

I think you technical gurus are confusing the heck out of the less technical of the members. A format for all intents and purposes DOES erase the images from your memory card. If I have a 16GB card with 8 GB of photos on it and I reformat it I now 16 GB of usable space, less the space used by the format for indexing. The pre-format images are still physically on the memory card but reformatting the card disables all normal methods of retrieving/reading them. Yes there are utilities and services out there that can retrieve your images from it but that's a different discussion.

And, as far as I know this is why the card manufacturers recommend the format. A bad card is usually a result of a bad FAT which tells the using device where the files are. There are programs which can scan cards/media and look for files, but you need a good file table. There is some good, but boring, reading from the card companies on this.

Based on what they say, they recommend format in camera, shoot, copy to computer and then reformat in camera for the next shoot. As other point out, back up from your computer as you see fit.

That's the way I understand the process. And it give you 2 chances to detect an issue with the card.

Formatting a card does not erase the files, it simple creates a virgin exFAT directory. If there are issues with the card, that does not guaranty these issues will be found during formatting.

Formatting in the camera may not PHYSICALLY delete the files but as far as the user is concerned they may as well be.

In no particular order B&H, Adorama, KEH, Cameta, Robert's, MPB, National CX and now Samy's as viable options for on-line sales. Thank you to all who confirmed Samy's and responded.

I keep them on the card until I have backed up on external drives. Even then I never reformat them. I use three types of backup, jump drive, standard external drive and an SSD external drive.

Curious as to why you do not reformat the cards. I always went by the logic that after I move my photos of of them I want to know that they are clean and in good working condition. Since I'm only using SD and CF cards it seems like cheap insurance.

Yes, Samy's is reputable. I live in Orange County, California and do business with their Santa Ana store frequently.

Thank you. Appreciate the response.

As already mentioned, for us west coast folks, Samy's is our go to store especially the store on Fairfax. I've purchase all my gear from Samy's Culver City store. I grew up in Culver City so it's like going to my old stomping grounds. If you need a contact or have questions you can call their Culver City store at (310) 450-4451 and ask for Boyd. He is the store manager and a really good guy and knows his stuff. Although I haven't been in the store in recent months, you can even mention my name, I'm pretty sure he'll remember me. Tell him Lane Joel from Beaumont referred you. Might make a different and might not but can't hurt. Good luck in your purchase.

B & H, KEH, EBay and others all sell used lenses. You have many choices. You may also want to look at refurbished lenses.

I was looking at a specific lens and found one on eBay at Samy's. Not sure I'm going to buy the lens but I now know Samy's is a viable option. Thank you Mark.

Make sure you understand their RETURN POLICY before you buy, ask specific questions and jot down the sales person's name and the time of day you called and exactly what they told you. Protect yourself first, then buy.

Good advice Bill. Thank you.

I purchased camera gear at Samy's Santa Barbara store. Was pleased with both the products and service from friendly staff members.

Thanks Rjay. I comb the used lens sections and it's good to know Samy's is a viable option.
