And, as far as I know this is why the card manufacturers recommend the format. A bad card is usually a result of a bad FAT which tells the using device where the files are. There are programs which can scan cards/media and look for files, but you need a good file table. There is some good, but boring, reading from the card companies on this.

Based on what they say, they recommend format in camera, shoot, copy to computer and then reformat in camera for the next shoot. As other point out, back up from your computer as you see fit.
