So has the second amendment but you don't have an issue with that.

I doubt you have much of an idea how I feel about the jurisprudence of the second amendment, but no, I believe the SCOTUS got it right in Heller and MacDonald. Not that this is germane to a discussion of the first amendment, which you conveniently ignored.

How is the fact that people from Somalia have a one in three chance to have mental problems and the fact the attacker was from Somalia not relevant to this thread.

There you go! I knew you'd make a point sooner or later. Are you suggesting that this particular Somalian was or could have been insane?

Actually, it is you who is displaying your ignorance. We are a Constitutional Democracy. A Representative Democracy also fits. This whole "we are not a democracy, we are a republic" canard is just a simple-minded (but false) cliche for simple-minded people that ignores dictionary definitions.

I'll take Benjamin Franklin's characterization over yours.

One wonders what the margin of error was in those exit polls. Critical information, one might think.

It's called Freedom of Expression and is protected under the 1st Amendment of our Constitution.

I doubt you'll find that phrase anywhere in the constitution. The first amendment has been stretched beyond reason by court cases, yes. But the first amendment protects freedom of speech, not expression
It is one of the ways I disagree with constitutional jurisprudence.

So, you're still willing to pay for children's education, just not in a public school?

Based on earlier criteria, roughly stating that the problem with public school education is single parent families...etc,.

How do vouchers solve this problem?

It allows families to choose where to educate their children. It would benefit poor families more than the wealthy, and perhaps provide a way out of generational poverty.
Is it the only solution to a problem with public education? No. Is it a solution to some of the problem? Yes.
I doubt there will ever be a one-size solution to the problem, but it doesn't behoove us to ignore partial solutions to the problem.

According to the World Health Organization:

"Prolonged conflict and instability have largely impacted on the mental and psychological well-being of its people. One in three Somali’s has been affected by some kind of mental illness, a prevalence which is higher than in other low-income and war-torn countries. Many Somali’s have experienced beating, torture, rape or have been injured for life. Others witnessed horrific violence against family or friends."

You are absolutely correct that a child with a loving mother AND a loving father is ideal.....I do NOT accept your implication that that is "required" for a child to be properly educated.

I also do not accept you implication that teachers being unionized is a "major" cause of the problems in the public schools.

Even children with a loving and stable mother & father do not ensure that the child will be "properly" educated.

So, it sounds like, since we'll never have the ideal situation you describe, we should just give up on public schools?

Kombiguy: See, you'd apparently prefer the government decide what your children should learn. I prefer that I make that decision. We are at an impasse over who should raise our children.

Nagy: what I prefer is that the average person, who is not very knowledgeable, or knowledgable in narrow areas, cannot make rational decisions about what children need to learn. If the curriculum does not cover something, learn it on your own. That is what libraries and book stores make possible.

Kombiguy: And yes, I do have control over what medical procedures are applied to my children. Or I did when they were children. You're familiar with the term, "parental consent?"

Nagy: You are becoming even weaker than before. This is outright factspeak. You have no control over medical procedures performed on your children other than accepting or rejecting them, and sometimes having a narrow choice between treatments. Rejecting treatment has come under legal question when parents use crackpot religious beliefs to deny the child care that is necessary to save his life, or health. You cannot dictate to the doctor surgically to repair a supraspinatus tear that has not reached the acute state. You probably do not even know what a supraspinatus is. You are not qualified to make most medical decisions, and most parents are not qualified to make curricular decisions.

The less educated they are, the more they are likely to make decisions based on crazy ideas like "She will never use geometry when she graduates, so she should not be forced to learn it now." The limitations they place on their own children will handicap many of them for life.

Yes. The government is so much better suited to making life choices for children. But see, you keep ascribing to me things I've never said, extrapolating past reasonableness, and performing amazing feats of reductio ad absurdum.
This is why we'll never have a rational discussion on the matter. So, good bye, and have a nice life, you and your supraspinatus.

Keenan: I wonder if you realize that responsibility for school funding and performance rests primarily at the state and county level? If you are asserting that the Department of Education is responsible for damaging student performance, what's your evidence?

Nagy: Very good point: His argument is as follows:

1. The educational system is broken.

2. Federal funding is a negligible part of total funding.

3. Federal requirements play a minuscule part in determining curricula and teaching methods.

4. State and local funding predominate, as do state and local curricular requirements.
