I find the coverage confusing. He got a waiver/exemption through a medical vetting process. He was deported because of the effect of his presence on good order. I got the impression that the whole problem arose because of lack of a thorough review process - involving all those who might say “no” at some point - which seems to be borne out by the anti-vax tone of those who demonstrated to support his waiver.

All in all, he is an amazing, outstanding tennis champion. But in spite of that, he is just a tennis player.

The travel insurance is worth it. If for any reason you would have to evacuated home, $700 would be a small price to pay by comparison. at 75 I have started to get it for overseas trips even though I am in great health. IMHO

An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, smile, and give them a "Thanks for flying our airline". He said that, in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally everyone had gotten off except for a little old lady walking with a cane. She said,
"Sir, do you mind if I ask you a question?"
"Why, no Ma'am," said the pilot. "What is it ?"
The little old lady said,
"Did we land, or were we shot down?"

I remember a flight attendant acknowledging a particularly hard landing with just a few words. “As you can tell, we have landed (pause) in San Jose.”

Many years ago I traveled to Montreal for laser treatment of my myopia. I paid out of pocket for the treatments which were done by the head of ophthalmology at McGill Un. medical school, using the latest German equipment. The cost? Less than half the price charged by US surgeons using older equipment. And I had great outcomes.
If you do the research you’ll find that in aggregate we in the US pay more for our healthcare and in aggregate have poorer outcomes than other high income countries. We have to stop believing the fantasy that the U.S. has the greatest healthcare in the world. We don’t.
My spouse is a primary care provider who’s nearing retirement. She’s been with the same office now for 35 years and her internal medicine practice has morphed from a physician owned and directed one to one that’s owned and managed by the largest healthcare conglomerate in Massachusetts. Her practice is managed by people who are bottom line directed. Her days are filled with more patients to see, with less time per patient, with less clerical help. It’s like the old TV show I Love Lucy with Lucy and Ethel on the production line at the candy maker. The patients just keep coming even though the providers can’t keep up.

My experience was years ago with health care in Germany. My daughter developed a kidney infection and was hospitalized. Fortunately her boy friend’s family stepped in to ensure she got the proper care. What was interesting was when I called the hospital admin to arrange the financial details. They estimated a five day stay and the charge was (as I recall) $1200 US a day. I asked about additional charges for labs, X-rays, band aids, aspirin, etc. The $1200 covered the cost of any and all hospital services. Very different from what I was used to. Everything turned out well. And they took American Express.

And the OP's added comment pushes it over into the political arena.

Just my opinion, of course....🙄

[quote=globetrekker]Interesting, hadn't thought of that. Don't know. But would there be any immatures at this time of year? It's not like these guys take years to reach adult plumage, like a Bald Eagle for example.

Similar pic to yours on ebird.org labeled immature male. Here’s the general site. Move through the pics to find the correct one.

https://ebird.org/species/buffle

They are supposed to reach sexual maturity at two years - which may or may not relate to plumage and coloring.

Live and learn.

Nice picture, great moment.

I’ve never seen a bufflehead that looked quite like that. Mature Female has a smaller cheek stripe and a browner body. Mature Male has a larger white patch wrapping the back of its head. After a bit of looking around, I wonder if you captured an immature male?

Here are four reasons given for a lack of food in food stores.

Omicron
Winter weather
Supply chain snarls
More people eating at home.

I'm going to do my part by cutting down on eating at home. I have about a dozen bottles of wine to finish. : )

I'm still using a shop online service. I go in on Thursday at 9:00 to pick up my order. the cost is only $3.00 for a $150 order (Hannaford, NY)

Pickup here (Northern California) is free for orders over $100. They actually offered the device for years before the pandemic (but I could never figure out why). Now I love it. Shop in half an hour late at night. Pickup the next day. (I do still go in to pick out some produce. But it’s a quick in and out.)

Welcome yourselves to the late 20th century & sign yourselves up for email billing & online banking for paying your bills. Maybe consider the novel idea of having your bank automatically pay the recurring & always the same amount bills automatically? Y'all won't be paying $0.10 - $0.15 per check and then paying USPS for a $0.55 (or maybe even MORE now) stamp.

For years (a long time ago) I resisted paying bills electronically. I didn’t want the personal banking data “out there” for the skilled hacker. Then I realized that every time I sent a check I was publishing the routing, account, name and address. Then in a telephone call to follow up on a payment by check, the support person asked me if I had paid from the account they had on file.

No more postage, no more early payments just in case, no more check fees, and an immediate proof of payment with a confirmation number.

Having said that I still insist on paper billing so someone else can easily find the bills if I am unexpectedly unavailable.

In the 1950s, if kids wanted to bring toys to school in England, they had to fit inside a matchbox. That led to the Matchbox cars, and they became an international success. Not to be outdone, Mattel went a few steps farther and introduced the Hot Wheels series. They became the most successful toys ever and caused Matchbox to shut down. Ironically, the company that forced Matchbox to close eventually bought the company, and it continues to offer the Matchbox cars today. It doesn't look like they come in the little matchbox, though.

“Matchbox” probably dates a person as much as “carbon copy” - and, perhaps, “dial a number”.

Interesting observation. Looks like they are a modern addition … although headrests were “invented” in 1921.

In December Topeka, Kansas had an unusual visitor. A male Mandarin Duck. Arguably one of the most beautiful ducks in the world. It's not native to North America. The native range of this species spans from southeastern Russia through eastern China and into North Korea, South Korea, and Japan. These ducks breed in China, Japan, and Siberia. They spend their winters in southern China and Japan. How this pretty boy came to Topeka is anyone's guess. He was really strutting his stuff and being photogenic. He was hanging out in a semi-dry creek in central Topeka. On New Year's Day, a storm came through and he has not been seen since, but the weather has not been conducive to bird watching. He was a local celebrity, and I am sure if he is still around, he will be located as the weather improves.

We’ve seen them in Monterey CA. But never the feet. I didn’t know they didn’t have webbed feet - somewhat like coots - so they would not be very elegant dabblers.

I hear nothing lately on the TV news about what is happening in the rest off the World. We used to hear Covid statistics from everywhere. Now silence.
Only new shere is Covid and the Omicron variation quoted every 2 or 3 minutes, and only Infections hardly ever mention deaths and when they do, apparently many people catching it and only a few deaths.
Should we compare against the Flu virus. I personally would like so see the comparison figures for all deaths.
Seems to me that there is a mass hysteria, not backed up by stats

We hear positivity rate (% of test showing infection). Key numbers are hospitalizations and - as you point out - deaths. Hospitalizations seem to be climbing. Deaths appear to be at a lower rate (4% vs Delta’s 20%), but the much higher infection rate makes those percentages a bit misleading (smaller percent, but a larger population).

I don’t see continued exercise of precautions in the face of the unknown as mass hysteria for two reasons. Hospitalizations - even if they don’t result in death - lock up and stress medical resources. Elective surgery? Accident victims? “Normal” serious illness? But even more important in my opinion, is the fact that each infection is an opportunity for mutation. And the virus seems to mutate much more readily than even the flu, perhaps just because it is so widespread and infectious.

One last thought is that Delta and Omicron are both present and doctors who must select the appropriate therapy have no way to differentiate in time for the therapy to be effective.

I hate masks. I hate isolation. I hate worrying. But it is my responsibility to my family, neighbors, and society to persevere.

Hi all, I have a Canon 7d Mk II and am happy with it. I'm thinking of purchasing a second camera for backup and was looking at either another 7d Mk II due to the high shutter count on my old one or if I were to go with mirrorless do I need to buy new lenses? There is a 7D MKII at KEH used that is rated EX+for $794. I really don't want to start over buying lenses if the mirrorless requires that. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

I’m at a similar point with my 7D - the original version- way beyond its expected shutter count life. Like a furnace or a roof, it will only fail when it’s needed. Until we take another trip I won’t really “need” it so I can walk on, enjoying the familiarity of it, not considering replacing something that still works. When its time is up, I will go mirrorless. Hopefully I will have enough time to learn to use the new camera before it’s needed.
