I think your black and white photos are exceptionally well done!

Just a quick comment on the male vs female model, as an artist, painter and illustrator I have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours learning to draw (the preferred term is 'undraped' not 'nude' at least at the Los Angeles Art Directors Guild) the human figure. It is also one of the most difficult things to learn to draw and paint convincingly because we are all so very familiar with the human body, that we all easily recognize the smallest flaw in the finished piece. I have drawn both male and female undraped figures, and I think that I'm learning to see the beauty in each, but it's been harder for me to see the beauty in the male body. I thought it very interesting to note that at a membership vote at the Guild a couple of months ago, with the membership being just about 50/50 male and female, the question was asked if we preferred male or female models, and the result was that 76% preferred female models, 18% preferred male models and the remaining 6% said they had no preference in gender, as long as the model knew what they were doing, they just wanted to draw. Although I have done a lot of drawing, I have only photographed one undraped female, and I was actually surprised at how difficult finding a good pose and complimentary lighting setup was. Consider that we use term 'handsome' for men and the word 'beautiful' to describe women, if someone talks about a beautiful man it's hard to imagine what that would look like, and if someone says that a woman is handsome, well, that's isn't usually considered a compliment. So here's my bottom line, because I find the female form amazingly beautiful, with curves, and breasts, and softness and gentleness, I can see the beauty easily, with a male model it's much more difficult . . . but it's there, we just have to learn to see it.

Great comments Jon and thank you for verbalizing that. I am most definitely in the 76% but there are also some good looking males who are great models (clothed or otherwise) The beauty of a woman cannot be matched and as photographers it is our job to honour her beauty to the very best of our ability.
However you also make another very good point. As photographers when we photograph women (generally speaking) we have beauty in our minds, when we photograph men (generally speaking) we have masculinity in our minds but we have to bring the best out in our subject whether we are thinking beauty or masculine, we need to recognize the beauty in a man and the masculinity in a woman if either is in their demeanour. I have the opportunity to photograph a male model but don't see much on this subject. If anyone has any examples (I envision B & W and not too explicit) I would appreciate your posts.

Thank you.

I have done a shoot where one of the sets shot was nude. This picture is dark but intentionally so.

This shot was cropped because I thought it was more interesting.

There are a few (e)books out there on posing nude males, Lindsay Adler has one which isn't bad, she shows the poses but not the lighting set up.
I have another book (hard copy) by George Platt Lynes which shows posing for male nudes. His pictures are from the 40's and onwards, I got a few good ideas from it. It is quite expensive though (when I bought it) it was listed at $60 US but obviously cost me more.

Google is a great resource as well.

Hope the above info is somewhat helpful.
Cheers
Mark

The Slater is the only remaining DDE left. It was originally sold (given?) to the Greek Navy after the war (WW2?, Korea?, Vietnam? -- not sure). When the Greeks no longer wanted it, it was scheduled to be cut up for scrap, but some enterprising ex-navy (I think) bought and it was refurbished and placed in the Hudson river in Albany, NY where it is now a floating museum. This series of ten photos from the more than 35 that I took will show you a little bit about the ship. Visiting it was an interesting experience.
Destroyer escorts were used for protecting the convoys in WW2 and for anti-submarine activities.
Hope you get a chance to someday visit this piece of history.

Thank you for sharing these pictures and history. So glad that she was saved from the scrap yard and is still serving by providing an insight to the lives of many brave souls.

My grandfather (British Navy) was onboard HMS Exmouth when she was torpedoed on Jan 21 1940. For those that are interested here is a Wikipedia article on her. My grandfathers body was one of the 18 washed up on shore. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Exmouth_(H02) I served in the British army for 12 years but have commemorated my grandfather and his shipmates by getting a tattoo of the ships crest on my upper arm. Thank you for your service!

Thanks to all responders. I knew that this topic was confusing. I understand why even the knowledgeable members sometimes get things "almost" right.

Here is a link to the 430EX III-RT brochure (Look under the Overview heading and click on Brochures).
https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/products/details/cameras/flashes/speedlite-430ex-iii-rt

It shows the 430EX III-RT, in radio mode, as either master or slave. In optical mode, it is slave only.

As an aside, the Yongnuo YN660EX RT, in optical mode, is slave only. This is different from the Canon 600EX II-RT, which can be master or slave in either radio or optical mode.

I decided to go first class and purchase one 430EX III-RT and one 600EX II-RT. This is not inexpensive, but I expect them to be high performance, flexible, and trouble free.

Thanks again for all of your help.

I am presently using the built-in flash of my Canon EOS 70D to optically trigger my 430EX-II off camera flash using E-TTL.
This works to a limited degree but I want to move up to a radio triggered off camera flash using E-TTL.

For a off camera slave, I know that I can use either Canon's 600EX-RT, 600EX II-RT, or 430EX-II RT flash.
For a camera attached master, I can use any of these or a Canon ST-E3-RT trigger.

If these were all that I had available, I think that I would go with one 600EX II-RT and one 430EX-II RT flash. Either could be master or slave. This would give me a lot of flexibility and power, with control of lighting ratios.
However that is is fairly expensive.

Thought I would mention that wirelessly the 430EX-II RT will function as a slave only, not a master. However it appears that the new 430EX-III RT can act as a master. http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-Speedlite-430EX-III-RT-Flash.aspx
I have not used either the Yongnuo or the Photix Mitros+ but having read some reviews on the Mitros it comes across as a good alternative to the Canon 600 EX II RT and about $180.00 cheaper (depending on where you buy). The Yongnuo 600 is extremely cheap, not sure on the quality but it does get a lot of good reviews. Incidentally the 430EX-III RT is currently $299 at BHPhoto. In the studio I have studio strobes but for portability I have 3 x Canon 600 EX II RT's which I love but if I had not bought them when they were on sale here in Canada I may well have opted for the Photix Mitros+. Taken yesterday. Not the ideal time of day to take pictures but I had no choice. Besides being around noon time with next to no clouds in the sky i had to deal with a large crowd making it very difficult to get any shots without several people in the picture or just blocking any view of the planes.I was able to get some shots without any one in them or next to no one that would be easy to remove in photoshop. The two aircraft are the T 28 Trojan trainer and the Soviet Yak-130 i do believe. Any comment are welcome.
