The photo is awesome. Thanks for posting it.
I am really starting out also, but I have the same lens I use on my D3100. The camera came with the 18-55mm when I bought it,my boss let me use his 55-200 and I liked it so I bought one. It takes good pictures but would like to someday by a 55-300mm. Everyone else with tons more experience will give you more info on this lens, just thought I wouldl let you know I enjoy using it.
Have a great and safe New Year.

I was trying S mode on the camera. tried to set everything up manually.
Thank you all for the great suggestions on helping me to improve my photo taking. Hopefully I can get back out this weekend and take some more to post.
Wishing everyone a great christmas holiday.

Dave,
thank you for the information, never thought about it that way. I am hoping to go back out tonight and try again plus try some christmas light shots around where i live but need to do tht before it gets pitch dark. I was told the pictures will look better if you take them just a little after the sun goes down so i am going to try that. I will post them for review next week.
Have a merry christmas.
