I use a R72 Hoya filter, and set a custom white balance with either a white sheet of printer paper, or the grass With the filter installed. If you try to set WB without the filter on the camera, it will not work.

Or you can use one of these in the proper size for your lens, I do, and it works great installed over the IR filter of course.

I was scratching my head and thinking about 28 degrees at 5:40am and you were worried about your Toms......then I realised you still use fahrenheit in the States!

I bought your horizon down to the bottom '1/3' line and that is a big improvment to my eyes..... "..eyes of the beholder.." though. Your blues look great.

Hi there, can anybody help me - I have just purchased an infrared filter (IR 850). The only instructions I got was to set your white balance by aiming at green grass and then putting the IR filter on and take your shot. I have looked on Youtube for a tutorial but didn't really find anything too helpful.... Can someone either tell me (slow and gentle steps please) or point me in the right direction for a tutorial. thanks

Grrrreat shots! That Cormorant looks like it has been superimposed from another shot. I have never been into bird photography, but seeing your 3 photos has sparked an interest. Thanks ~ I think lol!

I use a DSLR for most of my photography but I would NEVER sell my Canon S3is bridge camera. It actully has more bells and whistles than my 20D...... having said that ~ I would never sell my DSLR either.

I have just bought a Canon EOS 550 D. I have been trying to take lights at night but there is no setting for this. There is a setting for taking people at night but this activates the flash. I have tried various settings but results poor. My wife's results with point & shoot camera much superior as it has a dedicated setting. Any advice please.

Hi there Old Guy, on my 20D I use aperature priority for most of my night shots but the book says to use 'landscape' mode. Quote "..This is for wide scenic views, night scenes etc.." Unquote. sometimes I do something totally different and I will go as high f22. At that setting and 25 ~ 30 sec exposures you get some really brilliant 'stars' from the lights. The 'stars' are better than using my 'star' filter. Hope this has helped.

Hello again, what do the fellow Hedgehogs recommend for a photo editing program.
Never done it so I'm looking for a comprehensive program to edit my photos.
Please advise.

Thank you as always.

I think "Never done it" is the key. If I were in your situation, I would start with one of the free editing programs just to see how they work and what they can do. Although each program works differently, they have many operations in common, such as making an image brighter/darker, increasing contrast, cropping, adjusting color levels, etc.

I like Irfanview, a free program, but there are others. If you find a free/cheap program you like, you can use that for a while. When you need more processing power, you can download trial copies of Adobe and Corel products. Adobe is very expensive, and Corel does just about the same thing for a fraction of the price. Both programs have their fans.

As MWAC said, a lot depends on what your goals are - and how much time and money you want to put into it. There are many free tutorials for everything on youtube.

Thanks Jerryc41 - I have looked on Youtube for tutorials but the only ones I have seen require you to have a basic knowlege of the program....something which I don't have. I would really like to know if you have any recommendation out of Elements 2 or Lightroom 3. cheers
