I have been using Photoshop Elements for years and it is the best value on the market. From simple editing to the more complex (including RAW) it can't be beat. I also use Lightroom and it is excellent as well. But, for an entry into post-processing, Elements will keep you happy for a long time. It may be the only editor you need.

This is good advice.

I wouldn't advise any of the 3100/3200/5100/5200 cameras for studio use - stick to a D90/7000/7100 if you must use DX. Sooner or later you will want to use a facility that the former don't provide, for e.g you can't use an IR remote with the 3100. You need to do a thorough comparison before you decide.

The ColorMunki, Huey Pro and Datacolor Spyder are all good devices - do a search here for "Color Management"

I'm UK based and have used 'BLURB'.
I've looked at the ease and provision for uploading, processing, and lay-out for several alternative producers, but always come back to 'BLURB'. The decision has really been the ease of adjusting photos to the page layout that I like. Results have been pretty good to date and I have had no queries over quality control. I intend to continue to use them.
If you are interested in talking about what I've done, drop me a line and then we can either talk on the phone or Skype.

Hi JR1, yes I heard that Peter Jones had bought them. I wasn't sure when they were getting up and running again though. Rumour has it they will be opening a shop in London but I thought it was going to be an internet bases only company. I am still waiting to see if they will honour the vouchers my wife bought me for xmas. I will check it out thanks.

Peter Jones only bought the brand, not the shops.

How many folk, I wonder, take the trouble to actually walk the few steps forwards or backwards to see what the shot looks like with these two lenses? Don't we like using our feet these days?

Only those with no knowledge of perspective or distortion or depth of field.

The 35mm and the 50mm are totally different lenses, used for different purposes. How can one become redundant if you buy the other?

OK, you guys seem to know old cameras and perhaps one of you might know this: have you ever heard of a Cronos shutter? I think it's German, early 20th century and some Bob cameras used them (along with others). And if so, do you know if it was a leaf shutter or what else?.

The Chronos (not Cronos) shutter was made by Ernemann in Germany around the turn of the 19th century. I had one made in 1913 with a Carl Zeiss Tessar 16.5cm f1:6.3 lens mounted in it, on a 8x8cm lensboard. It was a Chronos C type, which was a rim-set leaf shutter with speeds of 1/20th to 1/200th, T, O and B. I think I remember reading somewhere that Chronos was the forerunner to the Compur shutter, but I can't swear to that. Here is a reference to one fitted to an Erneman Bob O type camera. http://camera-wiki.org/wiki/Ernemann_Bob.

NO! Only use it to get the effect that you need at the time.

I use a Packard-Bell Netbook. It's the same size as an iPad but has a 320gb HDD and 1g memory - came with Photoshop Elements full version pre-installed. Built-in SD card reader. Fits in my camera bag too.

I agree with Chuck Currey - looks like flare to me. One thing it is not, is fringing. Forget that. I think that the Vivitar UV filter may have had something to do with it - if it is not multi-coated for digital use. Is it a hold-over from your film camera days?
