Yep, that picture was run through image magick to drop it from 6MB to 3MB, which stripped meta data, not just EXIF in the process. But the files are kept as is. So if something you upload contains EXIF data, it will remain intact.

I enabled the option to store original JPG files.

When uploading a picture, if you enable this option, then the forum will store the original file under "Download" link, right below the resized version of the picture.

I'm attaching a sample of a pic I took on Daytona Beach. f/4.0, 1/250, ISO 500.

I enabled the "store original" option. Let's see how it goes.

It's about the text of the posts.

Imagine someone on a 1024x768 screen reading a topic with a 1200px image embedded. The image itself isn't the problem, but because of the image the entire page layout would get stretched.

The text of all posts would span across the entire width (which would be image width + margins + 160px for the left column with all user info). So in our example with 1200px image, it would be around 1400px.

A person reading the topic with a 1024 screen would have to scroll back and forth horizontally for each line of text they are reading.

I think I'll enable the original file access as a half-way measure. So that a thumbnail would be displayed along with a link to access the original image file directly.

Ads are outside of the post body area. Try slowly shrinking your browser's window and see what happens with the page layout. There is no margin in the ad's area, but there is in the post content area. It's invisible, but it takes space.

Removing margin from the post body would hurt readability. The text would start right at the left edge. Trust me, I spent some time working this out.

The problem is the page layout gets broken on smaller screens when images are wider than 600px.

It used to be that screens were getting bigger every year. Now, with the mobile devices, it's back to getting smaller :)

In any case, I'm looking into implementing some sort of frames for larger images to allow in-page scrolling.

Once that's done, there won't be any restrictions on image dimensions.

I'll look into it, but not likely to change it any time soon.
The forum uses image library and code that doesn't support working with exif data. So it would take some coding to add this functionality.

Quote:
I have stopped uploading photos in my posts, and instead I embed (or hotlink) my images so that my copyright EXIF is retained

When embedding images, please make sure they are not wider than 600px.

- Please watch your language. We would like to keep this site clean.

- If you create additional fake accounts to troll, then be prepared for your main account to be revealed. Most likely with "aka YourOriginalUserName" as the status of all of your troll accounts.

- Do not include a link to your site inside the posts. Instead use a signature (you can set it up in your profile).

- If your signature contains a link to your website/blog/store, then please make sure to reciprocate and link to this forum's home page from your site.

- Signatures should not contain more than three lines without wrapping. Blank separating lines are also counted. Please, no flashing images either.

- If you are "hotlinking" an image from a remote site, please make the image stays in place, otherwise we end up with broken pages.

- Do not "bump" your topics up. If everyone starts doing it, the forum will get filled with empty posts.

- To prevent strain on the database we will be splitting up topics that reach 100 pages. All conversations will be carried over into follow-up topics.

- We strip EXIF data from uploaded images to protect user's privacy. Some cameras are configured to include owner's full name in EXIF headers, and apparently many people aren't even aware their cameras do that. We only strip EXIF for the downsized thumbnails, when converting the image. When you select "store original" option, the original file is left as is, without any modification, including all EXIF data. So any personal information contained in the file can still be accessed by any visitor of our website. If you do not consent to the removal of your EXIF data, then please don't upload any images to our website.

- Approval or disapproval of users' posts by the moderators/administration does not shift the responsibility for the content of the posts (any claims made in the posts or laws violated) from users onto the moderators or the administration.

It is the responsibility of each user to make sure all his/her actions are within law.

In other words, just because a post wasn't removed/edited by the moderators or the administration, it doesn't automatically mean that the moderators or the administration condone the content of a post.

- This website is private property. Administration reserves the right to disable any user account at our own discretion without prior notice at any time and for any reason. While this is usually a measure of the last resort, we disclaim any and all responsibility for your inability to use this website due to disabled account.

- We do not generally delete old images/posts at user's request. So if you don't want your content to be shown here indefinitely, then please don't post it here in the first place. The reason for that is simple: deleting one user's posts usually requires deleting responses posted by other users. So for the sake of keeping the forum stable, we maintain this policy.

The one major exception to this is publicly-visible personal information, such as full name or home address or place of work. If you or someone else posted your personal information and now you want it deleted, then we'll delete such content on request.

- Just because somebody else is breaking the rules, doesn't mean you can do it too. Pointing out another user "doing the same thing" as a defense to a violation is in itself a bannable offense. If you decide to start breaking rules because you saw someone else doing it, you are compounding the problem.

- Threatening or hinting that you'll leave the forum unless I do something you want, threatening with legal action or posting ultimatums of any kind will not have the desired effect. I don't respond well to threats or ultimatums. In such instances, I'll either ignore your request completely (regardless of the merit of the original request) or I'll kick you out simply as a matter of principle.

- The most important rule of all is this: use common sense.

- Aside from that, please have fun, learn, and share your knowledge with others!

Various sections on this forum have specific rules of their own. So please make sure to read them as well before posting in a section.

Forum Rules

As far as the forum posting goes, here is a list of things to keep in mind:

- Please be polite.

- Do not post content or images owned/authored by others without their permission. Complying with all laws (including copyright) is solely the responsibility of each individual user. We serve merely as a service provider. If you notice that your copyright is being violated by a user of this forum, please follow the steps outlined on the DMCA page, link at the bottom. Repeating copyright infringements will lead to account termination.

- Do not defame anybody. It is your responsibility to make sure that your posts never result in harm or loss for any other user or any third party. You are solely responsible for your own conduct.

- Do not post any ads or promote anything without speaking to me about it first. That includes any kind of commercial activity. If you have something good, that a lot of people would appreciate, then it would probably be OK to mention it here.

- Do not post "affiliate" links of any kind.

- Please do not post links promoting any "signup" pages, newsletters, lists, message boards, sweepstakes, giveaways, contests, voting pages, etc. That includes any sites that are meant to collect "signups" for any purpose.

- Do not solicit for e-mail addresses or other personal information of other users to establish any kinds of lists, distributions, giveaways, etc.

- Do not send mass private messages to multiple users. We reserve the right to monitor and delete private messages to prevent spam, ensure compliance with the rules, and to deal with other issues.

- Do not make posts in all capital letters. This includes topic titles. (You might consider using your browser's zoom feature to increase the size of the font in case you are experiencing difficulties reading/writing.)

- When asking a general question (if you are not in the middle of a conversation), then try not to address the question to anybody specific. If someone else knows the answer when you asked a specific person, then they might not feel comfortable jumping in. So your chances of getting a question answered become greatly reduced.

- Try to use descriptive titles when creating new topics. Instead of something like "Please Help", write a title that briefly states the nature of your post. That way, people who know the answer or are interested in that particular topic would be more likely to click on it to read it and post replies.

- Please do not post your e-mail address or other personal information in the open.

- This forum contains NSFW sections, namely "Nude Photography, Boudoir Photography, NSFW, Discussions and Pictures" section. Users are not subscribed to such sections by default. So you shouldn't encounter images from such sections in Newest Topics, Active Topics, or in the digest. You would need to explicitly subscribe to the section or browse directly into that section from All Sections page.

Still, it's possible to come across NSFW content. That might happen if someone accidentally posts a topic meant for an NSFW section elsewhere. (In that case, we'll delete it or move it as soon as we can.) Additionally, if you open up a user's profile and list his/her topics or posts, and if that user happens to be posting in an NSFW section, then you might see that content.

- We do not allow politics anywhere outside of the Attic section.

Photo Gallery Section

This section is for posting pictures you took. If you want to ask others to comment on your choice of subjects, composition, settings, show off your pictures to others, or ask for general critique, then please do so in the Photo Gallery section.

But if you need help with a specific issue, then please post in the Photo Analysis section.

(By contrast, the Main section is meant for discussions. Sometimes pictures are appropriate in the Main section, but mainly when used to illustrate a point or help the discussion. Pictures of your gear, setup, or schematics of any kind should also go into the Main section.)

You can find out how to upload pictures to the forum here.

Rules:

- When attaching pictures, please make sure to use JPG files. They will be automatically resized and displayed in the posts. If you attach files of other types (such as DNG, CR2), then they won't show in the post. Instead, a download link will appear.

- Maximum dimensions for images are 600x800. So if you want to post a crop and be assured that it doesn't get reduced, then resize it on your end down to at most 600 pixels in width. Images with dimensions of 600x800 or less aren't modified during the upload process.

- "Store original" checkbox, if enabled, results in the original file you are uploading to be hosted alongside the downsized image. Please only enable it for panoramas or when you absolutely need to show a high resolution image. You can see the original file by using "Download" link shown below the downsized image.

- Original files are generally removed after six months to conserve disk space on the server. So if you enable "store original," then the downsized image will be kept on the forum indefinitely while the stored original file will be removed at some point in the future.

- Maximum combined attachment file size is 20MB. That's the total limit for all images attached to a single post.

- Do not hijack topics by posting your pictures inside someone else's topic in a manner that would divert the discussion away from the original poster's pictures. In such situation, it's best to start a new topic and post your pictures there. It is OK to post pictures when explicitly invited by the OP or when posting pictures inside an existing topic would genuinely benefit that particular discussion.

- Complying with all laws (including copyright) is the sole responsibility of each individual user. Forum administration is not responsible for user-generated/uploaded/posted content. We serve merely as communications platform and are protected by the safe harbor provisions of the copyright law and/or DMCA.

Having said that, if you notice that your rights are being violated by a user of this forum, please feel free to contact the administration by sending me a private message. We'll investigate all claims and take action if necessary.

- Try to include the specifications of your gear and settings in the post accompanying the pictures. Stating aperture, shutter speed, ISO would be great. Even better would be to also include your body and lens specs. This really helps others learn what settings work in various scenarios.

- We do not generally delete old images/posts at user's request unless there is a valid reason. So if you don't want your content to be shown here indefinitely, then please don't post it here in the first place. You can find my take on this matter here and here.

- Please don't judge others too harshly. Even though people usually ask for an honest opinion, please don't forget that we aren't all professional photographers with the best gear available. So please don't insult other users if something isn't up to your own standards.

- No nudity, gore, or other adult content is allowed in the gallery section (or on the rest of our forum). That includes any nude or semi-nude photography. The exception is our newly created Nude Photography section, for which you need to explicitly subscribe.

- Please do not edit and re-upload other people's pictures without their explicit permission. In other words, you may not open someone's topic, download an image, edit it (that includes adjusting settings, cropping, adding/removing visual elements, etc.), re-post it, and say "here is a version of your photo that I like better" unless they specifically ask for it.

- If, on the other hand, you want others to re-edit your pictures and upload the results, then please explicitly state so in the post.

- Administration reserves the right to remove any pictures at our discretion.
