I am in a quandary. I have been trying to shot the super moon. I have a Nikon d5300, and have a 70-300 mounted. I am using a tripod, remote shutter button. have remove the auto focus, & the vibration button is off. I set my aperture to 8, various shutter speeds give me a variety of exposure shots. The problem is sharpness. I am willing to try anything you knowledgeable folks can come up with. I have followed this site for a couple of years now, and have every confidence in the brain trust that is UHH.

Remember the moon is a moving object so it will be out of focus unless you shoot with a Fast Shutter Speed and lower f/stop. I shoot at f/4 and 1/500sec minimum.

Well, I have done some re-testing with clear target and close to level. I could not find a difference using rear view or the eyepiece and that was big relief to me.
It was too windy for my tripod to actually set/measure/adjust fine AF but, did confirm that there is "pretty" good focus at 600mm.
The yardstick is about 15 meters (45 feet) and the target is about 40 meters (120 feet). The pattern on the target has 2pt - 24pt lines.

These are straight from camera, no pp

On a calm day I will do fine adjustment for focus. I'm still not 100% positive of the quality at 600mm and would like opinions.

Thanks,
Regis

Yeah, I was trying to look around the circumference of the tree to see if there was a point that was in focus, and looked in the grass to see if there was a front focus point. I like getting a hard surface to focus on and check it from there. But, why not get any of the focus devices one can find all over the web and check with that?

YEAH!!! I found it, the focus point. It's at the Coordinance x=279 y=83 z=5 LOL

Take it outside (NO WINDOWS) in full light not partial, put a penny in that tree. This is crazy tring to determin a focus issue on a round tree where the focus point is splinter hidden somewere in all that bark.

You don't really want to push any DX telephoto to the max or min. I would try to stay within a 60-180mm and a little faster f/stop, say f/7.1 to f/8

Most of the ones I saw, we could cause to happen by using continuous shooting for about 300 pics as fast as the camera would shoot. This seemed to cause the coating on the shutter mech. to breakdown.

Thank you dcampbell52.
If and when I use Continuos Shooting it's only 5-10 frames. maybe that's why I've never had a problem.

The Nikon D600 Oil Spot issue happens on the Upper Left of the Sensor being the Lower Right of the Photos.
13,500 acuations on my D600 and never a problem with oil.
I wet clean my sensors every 6 months.

Unless you have a bunch of Crop (DX) Lenses don't waste the money. The D610 is the Full Version of the D7100. I use my D600 all the time, my D5300 just sits in it's bag.

The Nikon D700 12.1MP Digital SLR Camera Body is only 12MP. If all you want is a Full Frame FX go for it.
