The "AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G" will have a 52.5mm field of view, just like a 35mm FX lens would. The crop factor is applied to any lens focal length when using a crop sensor to get an equivalent field of view.

How could a DX lens be "Just Like" an FX lens???

I have both the 50mm f/1.8 & the 35mm f/1.8.
On your (ours) camera, which is a crop-factor sensor, the 35mm is equivalent to a 52mm, and the 50mm is equivalent to 75mm.

If I had to chose one...the 35mm. Closer to the "Nifty Fifty."

The 'AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G'(The only DX Prime in production) is a DX lens so it will be a true 35mm on the D5300 DX crop sensor camera. All the 50mm's are FX lenses so they will be a 75mm crop factor on the D5300. It's a huge gap for the DX owners.

[quote=MtnMan]These are both DX cameras. The 18-300 is a better choice unless you see an FX camera in your near future.

Sorry for the repeat can't seem to delete it.

But if you want to save money and weight the 18-55 and 55-300 that come with some kits are very good also. The 55-200 isn't near the quality of the 55-300.

That is the perfect starter package I used on my old D5200.
Then I moved to the D5300 w/ Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 DX, Nikon 28-300mm FX
Then moved to the D600 FX w/ Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 FX, Nikon 28-300mm FX, Tamron 2x Teleconverter
This is the killer combonation for me efective 17-600mm reach from Macro to Astro.

Super Moon: Went out this past July with my Oly SP 820 UZ with a 40X zoom; took 2 handheld shots, came in to my Canon
MX 920 computer and ran off two good shots. I enlarged and cropped the best of the two and got a shot so good, I am entering it in the county fair. Not bad for an 80+ kid!

woodweasel,

I shot mine last evening at almost 11PM (CST) with the following:

- Canon 7D
- Tamron 150-600mm
EXIF; - ISO 400
- 552mm
- 0.3 EV
- f/6.3
- 1/640

We should all take a lesson from you Tom.
Perfect settings, you didn't rack the lens all the way to 600mm
and you waited till the Moon was high in the sky (min. atmosphere)

When shooting the Moon, it is the same as Very Bright Sun Light. If you're using a 600mm Lens, minimum 1/600sec, minimum f/stop, lowest ISO, this is my rule for Best Focus. Here's one of my eary attempts at Auto Everything. All Bad

Hi Dlevon
The moon is never less than 200,000 miles away. It's diameter is 2000 miles. In terms of how far away from us, the edge of the moon is about 1000 miles further distant than a point at the centre - only half of one per cent more. Surely a camera's focussing systems could not show that difference at that distance?
