When I see this version, the partial sign is distracting. It might help to either cut it out completely, or leave it in, depending on whether you want that as part of the image.

You know what, you're right it would help fill in that area like Art did with his Crop. Thanks Craig

I would have gone vertical on this shot and given more head room for the top bird. The focus and subject are great.

Art where you thinking more like this?

Thanks Craig; I appreciate the advice and the pics are very nice. Did you use your mirror lock-up? Sure you did. But my camera is a DSLT, and the mirror does not move. I lose approx 20% of my light because it is redirected to the EVF. I was hoping someone out there with a Sony SLT camera had tried it; if it is a futile effort due to the pellicle mirror then I should just bring my DSLR backup camera. (also a Sony) I was also looking for advice regarding Sony's noise reduction engine because I hear that it is rather "aggressive" compared to other brands. I guess I am just lazy and don't want to spend a lot of time experimenting in the dark when I can stand on the shoulders of others and learn from their successes and failures. I am led to believe that this is not laziness, but wisdom if your ventures work out.

Oh, and the light house I chose is a working light house, but I don't plan on shooting the Milky Way on a night that the light house would be functioning.

Thanks again,
Mike

Hi Mike
I don't use any processing in the camera everything is set to Standard, no high ISO noise reduction you get snowflakes instead of pinpoints for stars and the longer the exposure the longer the star trails. I shoot 15-20 sec. then you can post process with something simple like MS Photo Gallery.

I have recently been asked to do a couple of astro shots, so I have been studying the subject. I don't have a "nice" wide angle lens, just the 18-55mm kit lens.

I am using a Sony sltA37; I know that the pellicle mirror lowers the low light performance of the SLT line of cameras, so I was wondering if anyone on UHH has used an SLT for astrophotography, and how the results were.

I plan on using the Milky Way for a backdrop for a lighthouse, and also shooting the lunar eclipse next month at the Dark Sky Park. If you use a Sony and have any advice specific to Sony cameras, I sure would love to hear from you.

I also have the a390, and if you think this would be better suited, please let me know.

Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike,
I shoot Nikon but the techniques I use will be the same on your Sony. I like the idea of the Lighthouse. If it is a working light you are going to have a similar effect I have with the #1 attached photo.
You are going to have a white burn out around the Lighthouse. If you can get far enough away, use your 18mm set to f/4, 15 to 30 seconds, ISO 1600 to 3200 This should give you a a good range of Effects you might like.
The moon is different all together. Shoot like its direct sunlight. f/8 to f/16, 1/100 to 1/500 sec, ISO 100. You not going to get very much with just a 55mm reach I use a minimum 200mm up to 2000mm.
3 photos, 2 extremes of the Milky Way and 1 Moon. I hope I am making some sense, if not please PM me and I can explain in more detail.
Best of luck I hope to see some pics from you soon.

IMHO - Try cropping the photo to bring into view

I wish they were closer together so I could do a good crop but it's just the fact that I had 1 fogless morning to get a shot of the 2 Planets in the same frame. Astrophotography does not always have to be beautiful galaxies, nebulas etc.

But seriously, I was thinking about something like that.

The Bench would still be there drawing your eye into the forest instead of away.
I really like the area you have to work with. You could spend an hour or so trying all different angles.
I think your exposure setting are really good. Hope you can get back there and do another shoot. Would love to see more.
