Probably a stupid couple of questions.
1. why not use the cable like I do to download. I never take my card out of the camera mostly because I don't want to damage the card or camera if I do it too much or dust gets in etc.
2. why format the card? Doesn't delete work well enough?

I too download from the camera, that way if I forget the card it doesn't matter, the camera is with it.

The standard USB ports in a computer pump out 5 volts of electricity through the port into devices to power them. That current is present to your camera when the camera is plugged in to the USB port.

In addition to that, wall adaptor powered USB hubs (external hubs used to provide more ports) are sometimes not as stable in electric output quality as the computer ports. Additional if a powered extra USB hub is not plugged into your UPS or Surge Protection, it may be affected by spikes and reductions in your home/office power.

Some people who value their cameras, won't hook them to a device (USB) that has a power output component in it's configuration. All standard USB ports do power other devices like external optical drives and external hard drives, ie. the 5 volt delivery out the USB port.

Those who know and check the "safely remove" function in the notification tray on the computer may not know exactly why they are doing this. The "safely remove" function turns off the voltage coming out of the port you are using, which is why "safely remove" is port specific.

Therefore, if you are hooking your camera up to the computer via USB, and if you are NOT using the "safely remove" icon in the right bottom of your screen, your camera is at risk. Ask me how I know. I destroyed 3 jump drives before finding out about "safely remove". Could not reformat any of the three.

To this day, I still will not attach my camera directly to a USB port. I use card readers. Cuts my potential loss to the price of a memory card or a reader.

Thank you very much for the information, did not know that. Nikon only says to leave the camera off until USB cable is connected and to turn it off prior to disconnecting it, I do not have a "safely remove" icon on my screen nor and icon to disconnect the camera, I am using a MacBook Pro, don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I fully agree.

Totally agree. A lot of people do not take responsibility for their actions anymore, no respect for other people or their property. Of course this is something that I believe is taught at home and that is obviously not happening anymore. I remember that as a child when I got in trouble, my biggest concern was facing my parents.

There was a topic posted today about a Hawaiin Island and a resort that several folks said was great and reasonably priced. Can someone tell me which island it was and the resort name? Thanks.

kiahuna Plantation. Have stayed there on three occasions and we are planning a trip for next year. I have posted a link below, but my only advice is if you are going to book with them, call them and ask about the units. Each unit is privately owned and the owner rates what type it is, ie. ocean view, garden view, etc. this past May when we were there we had requested an ocean view, but the unit that we had was on the lower level and you could only see the ocean from the upper unit. The people at the front desk are very helpful and can give you a better idea of what each unit has to offer.

Aloha

I found this Chevy in a car park on the South Coast (of England); it's tightly cropped because of cars parked around it. Please can anyone tell me what it is?
Thanks

It looks like a 1945 Chevy Pick up. Check this link.

So if you shoot in manual mode how do you hand hold a camera inside without a flash and still get sharp pics?

Taking photos inside without a flash is no different in manual mode than using automatic/semi automatic. If you need a tri/mono pod due to slow shutter speed when using auto mode, you will need it using manual mode. The person using the camera in manual mode "may" very well be using the same settings, iso, shutter speed and aperture size, as the person using an automatic setting. The difference is that in automatic mode the camera selects what may or may not be the exposure setting and in manual mode it is up to the photographer to make the selections of aperture, shutter speed and ISO.

That's my road-dog, Maddy. She absolutely hates having her picture taken, but she puts up with me. I see you have one too. Almost looks like twins.

His name is Mickey. He is actually my wife's dog even though I spend most days with him. He has that little dog attitude, he thinks he is a Great Dane and lets you know.

Here is the condo complex in which Sherry and I stay when we go to Hawaii. It's on the Island of Kauai, down at the southern tip, where it almost never rains. The northern tip is very rainy.

It's called the Kiahuna. It is a State of Hawaii official garden site. The grounds are sweet and so is the beach.

If you are thinking about visiting Kauai, check this place out on VRBO. Recently remodeled and very reasonable rates.

In fact, we're going again in November, when November's got
her nails dug in deep.

Aloha.

Hi Grey:

I believe you and I were at this resort at the same time. I was there the week of May 13th, I believe I saw some of the photos you had posted. That was our third trip to Kauai and our fifth trip to Hawaii. We have stayed at that resort on all three trips, we love it there. This is a photo of my grandson on the beach, he had the time of his life, he wants to move there now.

Aloha

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, this is for a Nikon D300S.

Has any of the Nikon users used Active D-Lighting? I've never used it and was wondering if it was any good.

I have a D300S and I was using D-lighting in automatic mode for a while but I found that it seemed to lighten the dark colors in my photos when it was not necessary, not real high contrast. I shoot in RAW and I like to under expose by about 1/3 stop, I find it gives me a little better color saturation.
