In my opinion, no on the ring flash. Based on the posted example on this forum & personal testing, a diffused flash trumps the ring flash in terms of more even lighting and fewer hot spots.
Thank you LoneRangFinder. I am getting a Controlled Output LED Ring Flash with Diffusers tomorrow.
I also got my 6"x8" Softbox to test. I am hoping I can use it in this Bas Relief application.

With the same Celestron C11 SCT.
This has not been flipped or corrected in Lightroom yet.
I think its cleaner.
Thoughts?
Ok.. I'm done adding and flipping etc.
Sorry.

OK this good stuff. Great clean round stars. The focus is excellent on this shot. The Core Nebulosity beautiful.
It's such a good shot to begin with at ISO 2500 I can't tell the difference (noise reduction) without zooming in to 300%.
I'm not sure but on the flip, I think any processing slightly degrades the JPEG? Not that my eyes could ever tell.
All Good Stuff, your best Orion I've seen.

Some great focus. But a lot of burnout on the edges facing the Flash.
I've been trying a sheet of paper on the other side of the coin as a reflector. It gives me a little balance. The reflection is still there. Jim would a ring flash help this?

Do you have it set on mirror lock up?

It sounds just like Mirror Lockup. I just did that a few moments ago.
I was shooting stars last night and tried to shoot a sunup photo and thought my camera was dead.

Really nice Albuqshutterbug. I like the detail with the Moons. Is that a 5th moon I see or a Star???
OK now you have me looking at 10" & 11" scopes. So much more light gathering ability.

It's been 55* at night here and I was all bundled up. My dog woke me up just before sunrise. He could not figure out what I was doing sleeping in the patio chair.

Sorry to hear that about your 7D.

Right place, right time.

Great job you got the eye in good focus. And 180mm is a good FL for the 70-200mm lens.

I didn't say it was bad, just that I was a bit torn only because I didn't know what you were doing. That said, thanks for the explanation and it makes much more sense now and I can see what you were trying for. Funny I hadn't seen that Hubble shot before. It is different.
I still say nice shots on both. ;)

Thank you Jim, I am off the wall at times, should have explained my method in the beginning. But I do appreciate any comments.

Nice clean stack on the first shot.
Torn on the second, but it looks pretty cool almost like melted candle wax.
Nice job Craig.

Thanks on #1 and sorry I did not explain what I was doing to #2.
Image #2 shows nebulosity of dust clouds and gas well in the central core of orion, to quote Bruce.
Some time I have to sacrifice some of the quality in total to show something else.
Shot is a Hubble shot I was trying to emulate.

That crater in the lower right sea is just awesome Jim. I still like those shots with your 11" scope. Is it the Celestron 11" with Prime Focus?
Are you set up to do Afocal?
