I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 and I really want to photograph a hummingbird in flight but without the wings being blurry. Can anyone help me with step by step instructions. I would truly appreciate any help I can get.

You have bitten off quite a large chunk on this idea. The main idea here is to freeze something moving very rapidly. Keep in mind the the birds wing works somewhat differently than other species. Most birds wing movement is aft of the joint supporting the wing. Hummer's wing work both fore and aft, and at incredible speed. That speed varies by specie but will fall in the range of 25 beats/second up to 75 beats/second. I have many shots taken at 1/1000 and faster that vividly show blurred wings.

I captured a Ruby Throated hummer at 1/4000 sec. The wings are frozen to the naked eye. Technology allows me to see how slow my selected shutter speed turned out to be.

Other factors to consider is what specie you are shooting, from what distance, how many birds are immediately near, amount and directing of prevailing sunlight, and probably many others. Professionals have been trying to photograph hummers for many years. High speed cameras have been fairly successful. The overall cost/effort is incredibly high.

Best of luck to you. Please let us enjoy your efforts.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but get ready to pay tax on ANYTHING you order online! Adorama, B&H, Amazon etc.
States will make a killing on this. Brick and mortar shops love it, but the nearest camera store for me is 100 miles away. How many of you folks are paying taxes on your online purchases now?

Another example of a reckless, out-of-control bureaucracy that cares more about protecting the ruling class (it's self and all it's little bureaucrats) than running a nation of free people. Free? That is exactly what b/o thinks his minions should pay for the lifestyle most of us were willing to work to achieve.

This is NOT about taxes, there can be no defense for the route this nation has decided to take. This is about entitling the masses for what they refuse to earn. Give the people everything they want and the people will expect everything.

GO B/O, and take the joe with you.

Received a notice from B&H that Canon is releasing the new EF 200-400mm f/4 lens. A 1.4 tele converter is built in. This lens was introduced to Canon shooters for use in last summer's olympics in London. From those that were lucky enough to have used the lens the raves were incredible. One lens that covers everything from 200mm on out to an effective focal length of 560mm! All @ f/4L glass! All for the low-low price of 12 LARGE $$$.

On the home front, my new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L and my CamRanger arrived yesterday. Maximum fun at my budget pricing. Today's schedule is filled with the view finder and my iPad, which will be used to control the camera. My avian friends await their official portraits.

Ain't life grand?

The last time I saw a hello do tricks like that was in Etheopia in the early 70's. the Etheopian pilot was not know for his piloting prowess. Helos weren't designed for aerodynamic stresses that this craft endured. The tail rotor is a weak link, it simply cannot withstand the torque levels that the structure endures. When the tail rotor separates the rest of the airframe is along for the ride. So is the operator. Aviation physiology prohibits a human from being able to withstand the rapid stress factors, not includinging the reversal maneuvers. Nice to watch hobbyists play with the real thing. Real helos do not fly in this manner. No aircraft does.

If I buy this lens...Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras ...and it is $479 at Adorama, Amazon, and B&H...is there any advantage other than the price for buying it one place or the other?

:) Each place has it's pros and a few cons. All are reliable and dependable. In certain situation orders placed with Amazon are filled by one of the others. Adorama and B&H have experienced photographers taking phone orders. These folks can be of great value. Amazon takes your order with one-click buttons. Choice of delivery (within reason) is available from all three. Though choice of three very good sources. GL

Most species of birds do not flap their wings continuously during flight. It's called 'Intermittent Flight.' The Chickadee in your picture has just rested his wings before the next series of wing flaps. Larger birds tend to flap continously and even larger ones soar where they do little wing movement for forward progress.
Does this help or is it much more than you asked for?

This does help somewhat. If you look at the photo and realize the distance front the edge of the bath to the perch is 32 inches, few birds, if any tuck their wings so tightly for for a flight of that length. The folks @ WBU don't think this bird ever spread it's wings at all, it actually hopped. I am willing to see what the folks @ Cornell think. They seem to know our feathered friends quite well. Whatever the bird is doing is most interesting, don't you think?

Can anyone tell what this bird is doing? It was sitting on the far right hand side of the bath. It then moved to the perch on the feeder. I thought it had flown tip I looked closely at the image on my computer. Nice move, don't you think?

In flight?

The instructions for adding a photo to a post on this site says "To attach a file, click the Browse button ..." There is NO "Browse button" anywhere to be found. I realize the humor here can be off-the-wall, but just exactly how does one go about posting a photo? :?: :?: :?:

Man Rules
At last a guy has taken the time to write this all down
Finally , the guys' side of the story.
( I must admit, it's pretty good.)
We always hear "the rules"
From the female side.
Now here are the rules from the male side.

These are our rules!
Please note.. these are all numbered "1 "
ON PURPOSE!

1. Men are NOT mind readers.

1. Learn to work the toilet seat.
You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down.
We need it up, you need it down.
You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

1. Sunday sports It's like the full moon
or the changing of the tides.
Let it be.

1. Crying is blackmail.

1. Ask for what you want.
Let us be clear on this one:
Subtle hints do not work!
Strong hints do not work!
Obvious hints do not work!
Just say it!

1. Yes and No are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question..

1. Come to us with a problem only if you want help solving it.. That's what we do.
Sympathy is what your girlfriends are for.

1. Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument.
In fact, all comments become Null and void after 7 Days.

1. If you think you're fat, you probably are.
Don't ask us

1. If something we said can be interpreted two ways and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one

1. You can either ask us to do something
Or tell us how you want it done.
Not both.
If you already know best how to do it, just do it yourself.

1. Whenever possible, Please say whatever you have to say during commercials..

1. Christopher Columbus did NOT need directions and neither do we.

1. ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings.
Peach, for example, is a fruit, not A color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have no idea what mauve is.

1. If it itches, it will be scratched.
We do that.

1. If we ask what is wrong and you say "nothing," We will act like nothing's wrong.
We know you are lying , but it is just not worth the hassle.

1. If you ask a question you don't want an answer to, Expect an answer you don't want to hear.

1. When we have to go somewhere, absolutely anything you wear is fine... Really .

1. Don't ask us what we're thinking about unless you are prepared to discuss such topics as Football, Hunting, Fishing

1. You have enough clothes.

1. You have too many shoes.

1. I am in shape. Round IS a shape!

1. Thank you for reading this.
Yes, I know, I have to sleep on the couch tonight;

But did you know men really don't mind that? It's like camping.

Pass this to as many men as you can -
to give them a laugh.

Pass this to as many women as you can -
to give them a bigger laugh.

Hi :)

Can anybody help me with this issue?Looking for a good wide angle lens for my Canon 650d. Price range about 2-2500$. Landscape and astrophotograpy is the main reason for this buy.

Thank you for your help and advice :)
Cheers from Norway.

:) :) Canon makes a wide angle lens you might consider. EF 24mm 1.4L IS II USM that does a spectacular job within landscapes. MFSRP is $1749.00 USD but a refurb from Canon can be picked up for $300.00 less.

The more I use mine the more I like it. Can also be fun for portraits and macro. It is a lens well worth considering, at least to use as a comparison to others. Check the Canon web site for user reviews.

GL with this project. Let us know your final choice.

Wise words of wisdom, Bruce. Most pro's have gear that looks as you described b/c it gets used severely. An addendum is to check right here @ UHH for used gear. Bruce mentioned the item concerning straps. I recently attended rounds 1, 2, and 3 of the NCAA men's basketball tournament where there were app. 100 photogs. Not one of them had a strap around their neck. Necks hold heads ...Shoulder mounts were very popular, but neck straps are awkward when multiplied.

BEWARE OF GEAR ENVY. It happens to us all, we all NEED the "next thing" New tripod, glass, gimbal mount, filters, remote releases, flashes, reflectors, back up body, every piece of glass made.

IMHO, you HAVE what you need to launch your hobby. Learn to use what you have to the limits of your gear and the utmost of your ability.
You will be amazed at the images you can take with "KIT" Lenses.
Save your cash and when you upgrade buy the best glass you can afford. Do not fall in to the trap of having to have every possible millimeter of glass produced.

Buy good gear once, cheap gear aint good, good gear aint cheap.
Last buy what you NEED, not what you want, keep an eye out for FACTORY REFURBS and look at used gear houses.
KEH is great for value.
Do not be afraid to buy "GOOD" rated gear. KEH and many other houses under rate their used gear. This maintains their superb reputation.
I know pro shooters that buy used gear. Then again most of the pros I know have gear that looks like stuff you would find at goodwill, used, rubbed, brassed, scarred, knocked around.
Oh and first thing, BUY A FOAM Camera strap and lose the Nikon strap ( if Nikon straps are as nasty as Canon straps, like having sandpaper on the neck after a few hours)

Most of all ENJOY and post what you shoot

8-) The IS feature can/cannot be a deal killer. So can the weight of the lens. I carry a 5D MkII with a f4.0L 70-200. This lens is great for catching birds in the woods. It is about one pound lighter than the one you describe. That was the deal maker for me, just a personal preference. I also preferred the $500.00 I save on the 4.0 speed and bought a 2x teleconverter. Life is a series of trades ...
