I do not know what camera you used but if the image is large enough direct from the camera you could just crop it, if you wanted it to be vertical. You placed him so that he is turned and looking correctly for cropping to a vertical format. Nice image.
In situations when time was an issue I have taken a clean white handkerchief and draped it over my flash unit.
Outstanding, brings back memories of my now grown daughter, and moisture to my eyes.

I like the image but a difficult shot. Here is a crop of your image that isn't a bad image and it meets the rule of thirds.

If there is a lens rental company in your area rent one for the weekend and try out the lens. I just did this with the Nikon 28-300 and I am glad that I did.
