On #2 bracts are the point of focus, go more for the fly. As Nikonian72 suggests, use the smallest degree of autofocus, press shutter half way to lock focus and re-compose and fire-- all of this before he flies away.

This large horsefly was about 1.5" long.For judging size the azalea pods are about 1/4" round. Nkon 5100 nikon pc macro 55 mm lens. f8 125 flash
