I have so enjoyed the jokes, puns, and funny stories that have been posted. Here is one that was my Dad’s favorite from back in the 1930's. I hesitated at first, but then that old saying I heard in the Navy kicked in: “a letter of reprimand is better than no mail at all” and said why not, so here goes.

A traveling photographer was going from town to town in the mid-Southern states, taking portraits for a dime. These two girls saw his sign and decided to get a photograph. The photographer posed them in their Sunday finest, and stepped back behind his old view camera, placing the dark cloth over his head. As he did this, one girl asked the other, “what is he doing?” The other answered, “he’s going to focus”, to which the first girl exclaimed, “both-us?”

Have a good day.

Superb, simply superb Jolly Roger,

A question, is the dark rectangle on the starboard wing, close to the fuselage a trim tab, or something else? I am puzzled, it appears too short to be an aileron. Other than my curiosity, I really enjoyed your set. The Spitfire was one extraordinary aircraft flown by many extraordinary pilots.

“P” does NOT mean “Professional”; The Nikon D850 User’s Manual, pg 128, clearly
states “P: Programmed Auto In this mode, the camera automatically adjusts shutter speed and aperture according to a built-in program to ensure optimal exposure in most situations”. Thus it is a combination of both, and takes ALL of the decisions out of your hands.

One can call it whatever one desires, however, keep in mind, that by taking the user out of the exposure decision, it does free the user from having to make such mundane exposure decisions and allows all of one’s concentration to be on the “art” aspects of the photo, so in that sense, perhaps it should mean “professional”

...just saying!

Greetings Old Hippy,

I think your photograph of the sun flower is the best sunflower photograph I have ever seen. It is magnificent. I have long admired your work, but this one really struck a cord with me. I bought a sunflower plant at the local nursery and was going to photograph the flower when it flowered, but I guess they don't call me "agent orange" for nothing, it died.

Back in the 1980's one of my fellow aerospace engineers had a part-time business with several others selling high end stereo equipment. He told me that one of his pet peeves was the lookie-loos who would come in to their store and take up a salesperson’s time learning about the different models, then purchase the equipment via mail order (no internet then). I really felt for my friend. Consequently, when we had a local photography store, and I would go there, I knew what I wanted, and purchased it, usually film, batteries, processing, a few lenses, filters, etc. Unfortunately, that store, which had been in business for probably 40+ years went out of business, but not because I took up a large amounts of a salesperson’s time.

When I bought my D7200, I went to Amazon, and read the reviews of other purchasers on line. When I moved up to a D850, I purchased it at a local photography shop, however that was a special case, because they had one, and there was an indeterminate wait at the internet stores. The point I am making is that it is not fair to take up the time of a salesperson, and consequently the cost of doing business for that store, if one is merely comparing items that will be purchased on line.

RWR,

Thank you for the solution to the problem of too small a screw to hold the ball head. I appreciate it. John

Unbelievable!

I am in the market for a new tripod and have been looking at a set of legs from Gitzo and a head from RRS. Then these pictures of the Vivitar 1321 show up and I looked across my office and saw my 1321 leaning against a bookcase. I could not believe it. Mine does not have a serial number on it, nor a date. I bought it new back in the early 1970's for my Calumet 4x5 view camera. I have walked all over the Yosemite valley with the Calumet/Vivitar on one shoulder and my oversized 4x5 case with film holders in my other hand. I do not remember how I did it...I just carried the tripod back to the bathroom to weight it, and I was amazed. It only weighted 10 lbs, but carrying it back there felt like it weighed 50lbs!. I guess the 35 year old me back in the 1970's was in much better shape than the 76 year old me now. Thank you for your posting; it was like running into a very old friend whom I had not seen in many years.

Incidentally, I tried to mount a ball head on it for use around the house and back yard, but alas, the screw in the Vivitar is too small for the ball head. I hope you enjoy your new found treasure.

Jack,

Thanks for the information. Before I go on, I have to compliment you on the photo of the locomotive steam drive box. I love RR equipment, and probably would still be into model railroading if the photography bug had not bitten me some 55+ years ago.

I had not thought of setting the camera on continuous shooting, then moving the focus ring during the shooting. The way I did it
was to take a shot, move the focus, take another shot...and so on. I used Affinity to merge them. The software worked fine, it was me who did not. That was the main reason I used to justify the purchase of my D850.

Thank you again, John

Madchemist,

Take a look at Thom Hogan's article on buying a new tripod, here is the URL:

http://www.dslrbodies.com/accessories/camera-accessories/tripod-101.html

Mr. Hogan makes some very good points. Incidentally, some time ago I purchased a
Zomei tripod from Amazon and after trying it out I am in the market for a much more
stable one. With just the top i.e., the thickest,(most stable configuration) leg extended,
I can put my hand on the ball and vibrate it with very little effort on my part. True it is
well made, but does not have the rigidity to be super stable, it is stable for its price.

Good luck, John

Jack,

Thank you for this set. That last shot where you used focus stacking is magnificent. It has really re-whetted my interest in focus stacking. I have tried it on my D7200 by manually advancing the focus, and that result was less than satisfying. I have yet to try it on my D850, but now I am definitely going to get out there and try again. So it was a 37 frame stack, how did you decide on 37 frames. I am assuming the step was either 1 or 2. Once again, thank you very much, John

JSCorbin,

Thank you so much for all of your data on the focus stacked pyrite crystals. That information will be of
great use when I actually start to experiment with it. I found the macro forum and have been going through
the postings there.

Once again, thank you for taking the time and effort to provide such a detailed response. John

Mark,

Thank you for your well thought out response. I am just in the "getting my arms around the focus stacking concept", so
my questions reflected some degree of ignorance.

I purchased Lightroom (the last version for sale before they went to their rent only program), however, I did not like it. I now use Affinity Photo and am very satisfied with it. It appears to do all that Photoshop does, only in a significantly more understandable manner. John

JungleJim,

This is one of the best attorney jokes I have heard in many years.
