I can see where you are coming from, but I think you should go for it. If you are interested in photography, I wouldn't pass up the opportunity and besides, you two may bond over it and you may learn something.
For such a slow shutter speed they didn't come out bad. You are going to want to get your shutter speed a little higher, which may mean raising your ISO. Using a flash may be another option.

I want to thank everyone for their recomendations. Now, I have some research to do on google satelite and images to see what works. As rplain1 mentioned, I should have specified landscape and nature, and maybe even some stars.

I may be in southern Arizona in a few months for business. While touring northern Arizona is on my bucket list, it's not possible on this trip. Can anyone recommend any worthwhile places to photograph in the Tucson or Sierra Vista area?
