I got one a while back and love it. The digital view finder takes some getting used to.

I have had to use USAA roadside assistance after an accident in I-70 in Colorado, hitting a dead elk at 65 mph. They were excellent. Others had hit the elk as well (initially hit and killed by a semi...) but we were the first to have our car picked up and taken to the dealer for repairs.

I have all of my insurance with USAA at this time. I want to insure all of my cameral equipment. Does anyone have esperience with USAA doing this and would you recommend them? What should I look for when getting this insurance?

I have had the same for many years. I haven't expressly listed my camera gear with USAA, but maybe I should. I also have coverage through the PPA (Professional Photographers of America).

The book is available on Amazon, and other outlets. I still treasure my first camera that my father gave me in 1972 for a long road trip out west, a Lieca IIc, 1949.

Creativelive has great on line courses for photography and cameras. John Greengo does the camera "fast start" classes and has one for the D850. I highly recommend these courses.

I'll be doing some night sky shooting this spring. The Milky Way is still in the west, but I live in Colorado, outside a smallish town at 7000 feet in a pretty dark neighborhood. I will be going up to Trappers Lake in the Flattops in mid July, just before the new moon, at 10,000 feet. The nearest town is pretty small, and 70 miles distant. The Lodge has electricity only by generator, which is shut down at 10pm. Then it's just headlamps and lanterns in the cabins, and the entire universe overhead. If the weather holds it is one of the best places for astral photography. It was also the first true wilderness area in the country, set aside by the USFS for that purpose in the early 1920's at the recommendation of Author Carhart and Aldo Leopold. The fishing can be pretty god too!

Thanks Photogirl17. We had a Wonderfull 13 year ride with him. We're in the process of getting a new puppy to help fill the hole, and to come with us later as we embark on what could become a two year photo/blogging and podcasting tour of the southwest in our r-pod.

I bought a Kirby L Plate bracket, and then an RRS bracket, which was a lot more expensive. The Kirby plate works just fine.

B&W or Hoya are my go to filters. As I noted on an earlier post, you always want to put the best glass you can get on the front of the lens, especially a high quality lens.

Make sure you get a good one; B&W, Hoya, etc. After using polarizers for many years with both film and digital I've learned that good glass on the front of an expensive lens is more than worth it.

Good for you! My wife was diagnosed with cognitive impairment a couple years ago and a study then showed that engaging in new, mental stimulating activities helped slow progression and even halt it. The best cognitive stimulation? Learning digital photography. But it needs to be "intense", with some work just about everyday. Ince a month with no activity in between won't work. Providing assignments and enlisting the help of family and friends might work between formal class sessions.

Mine was a hand me down from my Father, a Leica IIc with a Leitz Elmar 50mm f3.5 lens and a cheap but effective light meter. I still have it.
