This got dropped from today's posts so I'll try again. I am going to Europe this fall, Venice to Rome. I have a Canon 7D II with 24-105 and 70-300L. I'm looking to lighten my load while maintaining image quality. Am I better off with a Tamron 18-400 ($650) or a Sony Rx 10 IV ($1700)? I guess what I'm asking is, does the better lens on the Sony offset the smaller sensor size on the Sony? How much does the APSC sensor on the Canon with the Tamron 18-400 make up for the 1 inch sensor on the Sony? Thanks in advance for you opinions.

The lens is better, the sensor is smaller, how would the images compare? Better images is the goal. Does the larger sensor offset the poorer lens at all?

I am going to Europe this fall, Venice to Rome. I have a Canon 7D II with 24-105 and 70-300L. Looking to lighten my load, not opposed to changing lenses. Am I better off with a Tamron 18-400 (effective 24-600) on my camera, or getting a Sony RX 10 IV (24-600). Larger sensor with Tamron lens or smaller sensor with maybe better lens. Tamron $650, Sony $1700. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I did that same trip in January 2018. It was the best trip my wife and I had ever been on. The attached penguin picture was taken with my 70-300. The orca was from the ship with a Tamron 150-600. There were many passengers with long lenses and monopods, no tripods, on deck. The penguiun picture was taken on shore. I also used my 24-105, but the most pictures were taken with the 70-300. Weather never got below 28. The Drake can be rough so take anti motion meds along though ships doc will have them as well. If you have any questions feel free to PM me

You also have to be a little bit lucky. I could probably return many times before I would get the opportunity again for this shot. Shot at 300mm on my crop Canon. Lucky for me, they were facing me, not away from me as many of the animals were. Zebras and giraffes tend to walk away from you when they see you. I got a ton of shots of zebra and giraffe rear ends. Have an absolutely wonderful time. Be well and be lucky.

Went to South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana several years ago. Used a 70-300 on my crop sensor Canon for 95% of my pictures. Occasionally slightly longer would have been nice, but never needed wider. If I were going again i would definitely consider a 100-400. A 150-600 is pretty bulky and heavy.
Depending on your reasons for going, time of year can have a major effect on what you see. Our guide in Kapama Reserve recommended mid September to end October for the best animal viewing. It is their spring and the trees are not covered in foliage which can block your view.

Did a Linblad trip to Svalbard a few years ago. Got my best polar bear shots from the ship with a Tamron 150-600 G2 on a monopod with a Canon 7D II. You won't get close to polar bears so a long lens is a necessity. It's a great trip, have a wonderful time. You might think about renting a long lens.

I was in Kruger, Zimbabwe, and Botswana 3 years ago. Canon crop sensor, 70-300 for over 95% of my photos and 24-105 for the remainder. I'm sure you've heard F8 and be there. I would only add, 1/800 to 1/1000 exposure and auto iso. Better some noise and still get the shot. It is a trip of a lifetime. Enjoy.

I'm going to try some long exposure images. Should I get a 3 or 6 stop neutral density filter? I think the 9 stop would be too dark. B&H has B&W neutral density filters single coated and multiple coated. Is the extra cost justified for the multi coated filters? Can the neutral density filters be used in combination with a CP filter. I have a 5D IV, will the auto focus still work? Thanks in advance for your replies.

I just got my wife a Sony RX 100 VI for Christmas. . .early. I have a Canon 5D. When I take a picture with the Canon, I can view it immediately on the rear screen for several seconds (you can set the time), I cannot find a way to do this on the Sony without using the arrow (view) button. Am I missing something? Thanks for your help. We both love the camera and this is not a deal breaker, but would be nice to view just taken images quicker.

Went to antarctica last January with Linblad. Used primarily 24-105 with FF Canon on shore, but my 150-600 Tamron was excellent for whale shots from the ship. Another poster already mentioned penguin poop, I sat in "muddy" snow. Didn't realize until I got up that it wasn't mud. The penguins are amazingly funny. Have a wonderful time. Temperature never got below maybe 30. Take some motion sickness meds with you. We had pretty smooth sailing southbound through the Drake, but 30 ft seas and winds on the return trip. Saw from your posts you have been to Africa. Our African safari and our Antarctica trip were our all time favorite vacations. Have a wonderful time.

I did South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe safari in October 2016. I used a Canon 7D II (1.6 crop) and 70-300 lens for virtually all my shots. On maybe 1 or 2 occasions, I would have liked more length, but not sure it would have been worth the hassle to change lenses. Also if you are taking any flights within Africa, some airports will weigh your carry on luggage, I think the limit was 20 pounds. So keep that in mind. It will be an amazing trip. Take an extra battery or 2 and several memory cards. Have a fantastic time. Tripod or even monopod is pretty much out of the question.

Went to Antarctica last January with Linblad. Took my Canon 5D IV with 24-105 and 70-300 for landings and Tamron 150-600 G2 for whale shots from boat. Also took monopod for the 150-600 on the ship. Take some scapolomine patches for seasickness as Drake can be rough. Try them at home before you leave to assure that the side effects don't wipe out the benefits. This was an absolutely amazing trip. We are going to Europe in a week and just got the Think Tank Airport Advantage for the trip. Wish I had it for Antarctica. I can get the 150-600, 70-300, and 24-105 with 2 bodies and flash in it. It's tight but fits. Not taking the 150-600 to Europe, but nice to know it fits.
