There's always a reason (excuse?) to buy more stuff!

That is so very true! Cameras are my weakness! I had added a D500 to my cart, removed it, then right before I hit place order, I realized it was back in the cart, so I removed it again....I can justify the lens and the flash unit to my hubby....afraid he would have not had my enthusiasm on the camera!

That's really pretty small if it's THIS one.
3.5 inches square isn't going to soften much at normal distances.
Remember: Bigger is softer.
A cheapo umbrella would be more useful if you want to use this with your new 85mm for portraits.

You could even bounce the light off of a large piece of foamcore.

The smallest softbox I have is 24" and I use it close to keep it soft.
The largest I have is maybe 5 x 7 feet.
I rarely use it, but when I do, it's with my more powerful studio lights.

When I started working in a real commercial studio, after 15 years working at a newspaper and university, I realized how much I didn't know.
You don't know what you don't know.

I am still learning and adding to my "bag"! Most of the time I am running after my grandchildren to get their pictures, I have a hard time corralling them to sit still, so it definitely won't be a studio type setting! But thank you so much for your suggestions, and I will probably be adding some of these items to my collection!

Which softbox did you wind up with?
Lots of (too many?) choices out there.
I have a bad case of G.A.S. when it comes to softboxes.

Well it is a flashpoint mini softbox, I am not a pro and it may not get a lot of use, but I dislike the harshness of an undiffused flash!

Add an umbrella and stand and flash adapter to that order if you don't already have one.
Personally, I like softboxes better. Not as much spill.
Have a couple of these: https://www.adorama.com/glsb3131sbk.html I use with speedlights for on-location work.
Use the normally useless diffuser cap you may get with the speedlight to even out the light inside the softbox.
This system sets up really fast- had 15 minutes in a busy restaurant to shoot a chef for a charity auction.

Great shots! Now I am even more happy I placed that order! Thanks!

Well, pressed the place order button again and ordered the transmitter, had already ordered a softbox with the flash! Can’t wait to receive it all! Thank you for the great information!

I think you'd be better off getting the Yongnou Transmitter for off-camera use.
Don't believe the Yongnou flash is fully compatible with Nikon's in-camera infrared commander system so controlling the slave remotely won't be possible, and TTL wont work (though I rarely use TTL with a remote) unlike the Nikon SB-700....but the SB-700 has to be in sight of the camera's commander unit to work reliably. You could just put it on a radio receiver.

Have fun with off- camera flash!
Opens up a lot of possibilities.
Joe McNally's books and website are a great resource as are Neil van Nierk, Strobist and several Facebook sites like Learn to Light OCF site and the Facebook site: Strobist .

Thank you! Good information to have! I saw it said it would work as a slave, but was not entirely sure about that! They did offer it in a package deal with the wireless transmitter and I almost did that...now that I know what I know, maybe I should have chosen that option! Well Adorama, here I come again!!

I have the 50 f1.6 and 2 Yongnuo flashes YN-565 and really like both and have had no problems with the flashes after 2 years of use. I also have the 40mm f2.8 DX lens which was also a great buy for me for doing indoor macro work. The 50 is actually a great portrait lens, you just need to get a little closer.

I have been debating between the 50 and the 85 for quite some time, went with the 85, since the 50 was not much longer than my 35! Felt I had to get too close when doing portraits with my 35, so can’t wait to get the 85! I have an old 50mm E series lens that I used with my Nikon EM back in the day (gave it to my Dad & he still has it!), but it has to be manually focused and that is just too slow for me nowadays with fidgety grandchildren!! Haha!

You call that a "grump"? What would you call this: Nobody wants to hear about your conspicuous consumption and braggadocio. Guess that would be a compliment.

Haha! You are just a bundle of joy! And still I see posts all the time of what other “hogs” are buying, I am happy for them. Basically, I was just looking for some helpful info. on my rather meager purchases! Now, had I just purchased a new D850 along with a Nikon 70-200mm 2.8, your comment may have a little more bearing! But, it is what it is!

OK. Thanks for letting us know that you bought new stuff. Absolutely titillating.

Glad to give you something to grump about Jim Bob! How boring it would be if when we bought new stuff we didn’t post it! Hope you have a great day!

I've got the lens and the flash and I'm absolutely sure you will be happy with your choice.

Thank you! I have been trying to decide between the 50mm & the 85mm for quite some time, both have great reviews, can’t wait to try it out! Same with the flash, have been looking at the SB700, but seems that a lot of the “hogs” are using Yongnuo, and it appears that it gets better reviews, so my finger hovered over the place order button, then before I knew it, I had an order number!

Couple of years ago I got a Yongnuo flash for Christmas from a friend. I gave it a try and found out it worked great on par with my Nikon flashes. If you're not familiar with using a flash check out the strobist website. Lots of good info.

Thanks! I will have to check that out! I will need all the help I can get!

I have that flash as well, two of them actually, and am quite happy with them. Sometimes reading the "manual" that comes with that brand of flashes can be interesting, things get really garbled in translation, but the flash itself is great.

Good to hear! I am hoping that it will work as a slave to my on camera flash, had heard about the “manual” so hoping I will be able to figure that out!

And will soon be the proud owner of the Nikon 85mm 1.8 G lens and a Yongnuo YN685 speedlight for my D7200. Was looking at the Nikon SB 700, but the Yongnuo was 1/3 of the price of the Nikon. Hoping I made good choices! Can’t wait to see that Adorama box!!

I love my D7200! I have Darrell Young’s book Mastering the Nikon D7200 and I also have Steve Perry’s Secrets of the Nikon Autofocus System and They have helped me tremendously. They both will help you with your new camera. Just have your camera in hand while reading so you can practice as you go! And have fun, it is a fun camera!

I have several NG DVD courses that my husband bought for me, my favorites are the ones that feature Joel Sartore, he is easy to follow and I have learned a lot from his courses. They each come with a workbook with assignments after each section to help you practice what you just watched.
