Section D deals with multiple flash units.

I can't find that they address controlling a single flash remotely with the on-camera flash in TTL mode.

But I do it and it works fine.

I believe controlling a single flash remotely is the same as controlling more than one flash remotely. Can you verify whether you are using SU-4 mode? I think that's the only way you can use an SB-700 off camera without a commander flash unit.

Note that you set TTL mode with the upper left switch and remote with the off/on/remote/master lower right switch.

Try it.

Yes, the switch on the flash says TTL, but you're operating the flash in slave mode (flash set to 'remote' and pick 'SU-4' mode). And the flash can be in either Auto or Manual mode when doing this. Further details are on page D18 of the SB-700 user manual.

This is certainly useful, but is different than using the flash with CLS (creative lighting system) and a commander flash.

You don't need the CMD mode to trigger and operate the SB 700 off camera. It works fine with the Nikon DSLRs that don't have CMD mode; e.g. D3xxx and D5xxx. You can use the on-camera flash to control the SB700. Yes, you set the SB 700 on remote.

CMD mode is to control multiple banks of flashes.

Well... Kinda. You can control one or more remote flashes using commander mode.

The SB-700 will work as a remote in two ways:

1) set as a remote flash responding to a camera set up as a commander. In this situation it will set its output based on the TTL (through the lens) exposure determined by the camera, as if it was on the hotshoe.

2) set up as a slave flash responding to any other flash that's set off. Using this mode you can trigger it from a DSLR that doesn't have commander mode, but you don't get the TTL exposure control. You'd have to run the flash in manual mode.

I have the same issue with trying to fit the dome and colored filters onto my SB-700 - and none of these parts have any Velcro. I have looked at them, fiddled with them, until I am almost blue in the face. IMO, these accessories were NOT designed specifically for the SB-700.

Mine fit OK. I'd say it's not obvious which side goes up, though. Are you maybe trying to put it on upside down?

With those bright objects on a dark background it looks like the camera is doing a good job of not blowing out the highlights.

Probably just a little different composition with a few more white birds caused the camera to make a different exposure decision.

I would definitely go with the 2.8. The image stabilization is not going to be a factor for you shooting basketball, as you'll want your shutter to be 1/250 or faster to stop the action. IS would be helpful in other situations, of course. -- Dave

I'm guessing it must be a colorspace thing. I download it and looked at the EXIF information and found this tag:

[EXIF] ColorSpace: Uncalibrated

I compared it to a random jpg image of mine, which has this:

[EXIF] ColorSpace: sRGB

I wonder if maybe there is some assumption going on in the conversion to display image that ends up in the colors getting dulled down.

Maybe try processing it through your old workflow to see if that one displays right? That would at least narrow down where the problem is.

Wanda -

I've been a user of IMatch (www.photools.com) for over a decade, and recently upgraded to the latest version. This is a very flexible program that will track your images across whatever drives and folders they reside on, and even handles offline images (like on an external drive that you don't have plugged in).

You can categorize images, or keyword them, or rate them; you can manage multiple versions of images, export them to various formats, applying resizing, or image or text overlays.

There is tons of functionality there, but you don't need to use the parts that you don't need. You may want to check it out.

I recall seeing in the documentation a section specifically devoted to using IMatch and Lightroom together.
