I haven't seen the color version but I definitely like the B&W.

I guess it's my East Coast hereitage but if I saw one of these around my place, I'd say it was a wolf; not a coyote. Around here they're too big to be a coyote. Coyotes are skinny and a lot whiter.

Just to follow up--the scanner is a Supercoolscan 5000ED. Probably superseded by something of higher quality by now but I'm happy with this one.

Years ago I bought a Nikon scanner that scans at 4K pixel/inch. It's slow but turns out very high quality images. It has a cartridge that holds about 50 slides that feed automatically. The data feeds into my laptop and I then use PS to do the image maniputation. Works great. I inherited thousands of Kodachrome slides from my mother that I'm still converting to digits but there's a lot of history there that I don't want to lose. 35mm slides convert to about 64Mpixel but with storage so cheap these days, who cares.

Set the focus on manual; turn the focus to infinity; set the shutter to P (if you have it) or B (for bulb) and hold it down for several seconds. My Pentax with an f/2.8 lens took 6 seconds to get a good exposure. And that's if I had a bunch of other stars in the field of view--like the big dipper. Without other stars, exposure was 15 seconds. I can't account for the wide difference in exposure times. My suggestion is: play around with it. You'll get it right eventually. Good luck and good shooting.

I think this is just a curiosity question. I don't think it's meant to pry into your private space.

I have a bunch of Pentax's: from film to digital. I keep up with the latest digital so I have as many pixels as I can get. I actually still use the film ones on occasion but the digital is so much better. Used to use Kodachrome but that went out years ago; still have some Kodachrome rolls that I'd better use soon before that goes away too. They've been in the freezer for years but I think they're still OK.

What the phone doesn't give you is a choice of lenses. That remains the realm of the DSLR (for now anyway). You can zoom in on a phone but eventually you run out of zoom (or image quality). The DSLR also gives you the option of selecting time and aperature for different effects. But the phone is certainly getting better and I am using mine more and more but I still lug the DSLR around when I go on photo trips. I'd rather have a 500mm when I have an elephant coming at me (like when I was in Tanzania several years ago). And that's a real no s___ experience!!!!

I was on a trip to St Lucia with my Canon RP and intended to take some really nice pics when I was on the Tet Paul trail over what they call the Stairway to Heaven. It was raining so hard when we left for the excursion that I chose to leave my Canon at the motel and take only my Samsung S10. When we got up there, the sun came out and it was beautiful looking down on the Pitons of St Lucia. I took lots of pics that looked great on the phone and was satisfied that I had gotten what I needed. When I got home, I rushed to look at them in Photoshop. They were good and would look great on Facebook but when processed through Photoshop, I could tell that the quality just wasn't there. The resolution and sharpness just wasn't as good as my Canon. I was looking for a couple of wall hangers that I could enlarge, print and look at for a long time. I was really disappointed in the result. I came home, sold my RP and bought a Canon R with some weather sealing for the next time I get lucky enough to go to St Lucia which will most likely be never.

It's not the camera (although you need a high quality camera); it's the lenses that count. And I have a lot of those!!!! A good SLR and a variety of lenses; both zooms and single focal length are key to image quality.

One of these days I'm going to see a launch. Years ago when I was stationed in LA, I went up to Vandenberg to see a launch and it ended up being scrubbed for winds aloft. Pissed me off. The Security Police tried to chase me off but I just moved a little bit down the road and parked again--all to no avail.

Two or even three places to store the really good ones is never a bad thing. I keep my archival imagery in a fireproof gun safe. And the imagery is more valuable to me than the guns.

I'm not sure how I ever found this place but I'm glad I did. It's really a delightful website for photography and about everything else. And the index (table of contents?) leads you to whatever you want to see. I've really enjoyed it and will continue to do so. If you're a beginner or experienced photographer there is always something to learn. Keep up the good work!!!!

If you want to see DDD's photo's from Vietnam, get a copy of "War Without Heroes". It was printed by sheet fed gravure in the Netherlands. Really high quality stuff. Marines (who were his favorite subjects) in action at Khe Sanh, Con Thien and Cua Viet. Published in 1970.
