Large areas of hi-lites on the tent are blown. Reading the rules I don't think it is allowed for me to post a screen shot of the histogram showing the blown areas in this thread. Perhaps I could start a new thread, which is allowed under the weird rules of this board, and post the screen shot if you would like me to?

No thanks, not at all necessary. Please read my reply to nightski and my first reply to Billyspad. For your information, a far more accurate colour value test method is to take an eyedropper sample and read the values for each channel.

I expect you will be digging out the histogram next to show us that your whites are not blown.

Please read my previous post, I said the whole image was over processed, the whole tent area measures 255 X 3. One of my pet hates is blown highlights, do you think I would note the relatively small nitpicks in Billyspad's photo and miss that in this this abomination?

Thank you, Dardan, for pointing out my error.

Because there is a term "achromatic" and because there are new people wishing to learn I felt that I had to correct things or there might be a degree of misunderstanding out there.

Well darden I feel so much better knowing you are not worried anymore!!
When I critique a picture I assume thats what it has been posted for and offer an opinion on what I see. If its posted for some ulterior motive I have neither the time nor the inclination to consider what that might be. You wish to post overdone PP then please carry on dear boy. I shall treat you as I treat everybody else and comment on what is presented.

Oh dear.

An interesting study in visual arrangement. Technically it looks good. You do sound like a bit of a post processing expert, so I am surprised you didn't rid the image of the distracting wires. Please remember that edits are not allowed to be posted in the Photo Critique Section. You must start a new thread.

It would of course have been a snip to remove the wires but as they are absolutely essential to the structure and an indispensable part of the subject it would have appeared most unnatural and unnerving to any circus buff or weekend camper to have been denied being able to see them.

Strangely interesting shot and well spotted. I would never guess this was tent so although I now know those ropes are keeping it up they do not help what is a nice photo. I think they need to go and the blown white canvas would benefit from some attention.
The simple colours you have captured do make a nice image.

Phew Billyspad, I found this for you and for a moment I was worried. I'm so glad you saw my overdone PP and that it was you who first responded. No-one needs to say any more thanks because Billy and I are now even.

Actually the retailer who sold this to me was legit, I've done business with them for over fifteen years. My usual sales person was as surprised as I was when it came to the alleged "sale".

It was Nikon who decided to reduce the price, remove those two items from the box and call it a sale. Checking their web site after the fact their accessory list for that lens does show the case and the hood as optional extras. The retailer is as much the victim here as I was.

Now I happen to be in Canada, maybe it's different in the States and maybe that's why B&H lists the lens complete with those two items. This could be a Nikon Canada gambit instead of a general one.
Actually the retailer who sold this to me was legi... (show quote)

So after getting all worked up about being ripped off you now find out that the Nikon accessory list for that lens does show the case and the hood as optional extras. Did you go back to Nikon and apologize? In any case, a non OEM lens hood which can do exactly the same simple job, can be purchased on Ebay for under ten bucks.

Seeing as though I played critic today I guess I should put up myself.

I was driving in the countryside and slowing to enter a small town I glimpsed just the the very top of this Bigtop. To my wife's bemusement, I backtracked with some difficulty as there was much traffic, and finally made this shot. D7100 + Nikkor 18-200.

I can assure I take not of everybody's observations and would not call you a nitpicker or say you rant. You have an opinion which is valid and welcome on a Critique forum

Thanks Billyspad, I was a bit worried that you might be offended by my being candid, especially since this is my first airing here. Other than the processing, your photograph is a well constructed and interesting study which might present well in mono but do rethink your semi-saturated rendition, perhaps paying better attention to colour balance and selection criteria.

Your seeing an awful lot in an image thats resized to around 1000 pixels on its longest side with a resolution of only 72dpi. But I bow to your greater knowledge my man and have taken note of your concerns.
I had a feeling black and white was the way to go with this lol

You may wish to dismiss my "concerns" as merely the rantings of a nitpicker or you can choose to review my observations objectively. It is this sort of attention to detail that sets apart a competent photo editor from a near enough is good enough finger painter.

Think this is a monitor thing. Looks fine here but lots of talk on Hog always about uploads not looking as they should on different equipment.
But you can only comment on what you see and I understand that. Your monitor may be correct and mine not?

I don't believe it's a monitor or UHH upload issue. This is a critique site and you have invited opinion on how to better your photography.

It is apparent that quite a bit of processing has been carried out. You have applied a degree of selective desaturation but unfortunately in some areas your selection has been somewhat imprecise. Where you have selected her hair for instance. Another problem is the colour bleeding from the right hand area of her shirt and her foot exhibits a desaturated area. My initial concern however remains as the overall purple cast that the image has, which is also evident in the darker areas of the otherwise apparently desaturated areas.

I'm not sure I've ever heard of W/B problems that create fringing. That's a new one to me. I'm sure Shakey just missed typing a space between "a" and "chromatic" ... he certainly knows what chromatic abberation is. lol

There is such a thing as an "achromatic" lens design which reduces the effects of chromatic aberration. Accuracy is essential when making reference to technical terms.

You are correct in saying that W/B problems will not create C/A fringing.

I don't see it on my monitor or my laptop.

If you zoom in to 300% you can see purple fringing around the lady's left shoulder and upper arm. This is achromatic aberration, which may be found with the most expensive of lenses.

It's a very pleasant portrait. I like it.

The term is "chromatic aberration" not "achromatic" and the "purple fringing around the lady's left shoulder and upper arm" is not an example of the phenomenon in this case.

Her feet and arms are purple I believe they call it illness. Ill try and find only 100% healthy folks in future. Not that easy when your walking around among people who cant afford medical care but I will surely try!!

No, I mean that the whole shot has a purple tinge to it. Looks like a white balance problem.
