Would you explain what a "window pull" is? And, could you explain the "darken" technique?

I don't do commercial real estate. I do take tourist pictures in "historic" buildings. Where I want the window views to mix with the interior detail I do a simple HDR technique. I set the camera to auto bracket and hand hold. Lightroom lines them up and combines them. I can post some samples if you want.

HI a window pull is when you are in room where the window is many time brighter than the ambient inside. Its a technique where you need to balance out the difference in the exposures. The darken mode is where you use the brush tool in a mask to brush in the contrast between the bights and darks, leaving a beautifully exposed window that looks natural to the rest of the room, All to often photos have a beautiful interior but the windows are burnt out or too light to see any of the outside. In real estate photography it is essential to be able to see the outside view, especially where I shoot, which is at the shore. Go to YouTube and type in real estate window pulls.

Hi Mishka. welcome as a fellow photographer. You will learn a lot in this forum. The photographers here are experienced and love sharing their knowledge. Of course like any other forum you will quickly identify those that are rude and disrespectful. Don't judge the rest of us by the one or two rude know it all's.... Now that you have a great camera your creativeness will come out. Welcome. Lee

I went out on a real estate shoot and took some outside shots in the rain that was just a drizzle. Then my camera's exposure adjustment stopped working. It took about 3/4 of an hour before the camera was working again. I did cover the camera while shooting. I don't think the camera got wet. Just wondering if it was the moisture? My camera has worked perfectly since then. Does this mean that I can no longer use this camera for any shots outside when its wet, drizzling or moist? Any suggestions. I have a shoot tomorrow which is suppose to be a wet day, and yesterday I went to the shoot and shot the outside of the house because it was a sunny day.. Just covering my bases till I know what's going on with my camera during wet days.

I do real estate photography and want to upgrade my editing for window pulls. I can not get the "darken" technique to work. I am using Adobe CC for Lightroom and Photoshop. I shoot in SRAW, and followed many of the videos on YouTube that show how to do a window pull using "darken" mode. I take an ambient shot of the room, then a flash shot, then migrate to photoshop layers. When it comes to actually using the brush tool and darken mode, to expose the window pull it doesn't do anything. up to now I have been cutting the over exposed layer to expose the widow layer beneath, which is time consuming. Help needed.

Hello All. As an amateur photographer for 40+ years, I have had ample opportunity to take more spontaneous stills during weddings ( at the couples' /families' request or permission). Now, we have the honor of helping to select a wedding photographer for our daughter and her (wonderful) beau. While scanning my own thoughts and the ever present internet suggestions, it occurred to me that Ugly Hedgehog members might have unique and powerful insights and ideas on the topic. So .... what may be the most overlooked but valuable questions to clarify with perspective wedding photographers? Also, what "shots" might go overlooked that could be set up fairly easily? Any other thoughts for unique and "capturing" wedding photos? Any special ideas used when couple likes natural light outdoor pictures if the weather doeasn't cooperate that day? Thanks so much.

Hi Tullyboy. Keep it simple. This is your daughters wedding and brides pre occupy themselves with every minute detail of their wedding. I suggest that you let your daughter interview her own photographers and just let her know that you will give your opinions "when asked"! So often in the years I have been here on this site, I have read some of the hogs ( non photographic ) advice sadly being over technical as well as outside the main issues. Just keep it simple Tullboy, & give your opinion and that's all. Let your daughter and new son-in-law make their own decision. Women have a way of knowing things with their gut instincts far distanced from all of the technical things that others may have. Wedding pros know what brides want.

I am interested in purchasing a new Canon lens (24-105mm). However, when I look at the B&H catalog, I notice there are two such lenses available. 24-105 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and 24-105 f/4 L IS ll USM. I was wondering if anyone could explain the difference. I enjoy taking pictures of flowers as well as old barns/buildings.

I own a 24-105 F4 because I wanted a fixed aperture at all zooms.

this is my first run at HDR. Not too sure about it? whatathink?

Hi The 2nd photo lacks detail in the blacks. when doing real estate photography I use HDR, but, I have learned through experience when shooting a room with windows that I need to set my camera not in rapid bracketing ( to automatically set the bracketing +2/-2 off normal) but to alter the shutter speeds (I shoot in aperture priority setting the aperture to F8) at normal exposure, +1stop and -5stops. Sometimes there is enough light in the room so that I don't need to set the shutter to +1, actually many times I set the exposure to -2 stops off of normal exposure. I don't preset the bracketing, but actually set + or - stops to each room differently. As to the color adjustments in HDR, I set them to what I feel is normal looking, avoiding that HDR look.

It's also been in PS Elements since v 12 and possibly before that. I think we all dream of having Content Aware in Lightroom. Personally I would be happy to see all tools available for working on selections via the Adjustments brush. I've a funny feeling it's not going to happen. I suspect that's one of the ways they deliberately limited Lr's functionality so as to make the full PS a more appealing prospect.

I would like LR to have the adjustment brush square rather than round so you can get into the corners. Maybe a selection tool like the lasso tool...

HI I am a photographer that works mostly in LR and haven't kept up with the new additions in Photoshop. Here's a new one. If I have taken a photo where I want to remove something in the background, let's say a telephone pole or car. I usually use the stamp tool, but PS has a better way now. Start by using your lasso tool and make a selection, then click on edit/fill, then on the top under "contents" click on the down drop and select "content-aware /OK.

It's like an adaptation of using the "spot remover" in that it uses the surroundings to fill in. Hope this saves everyone lots of time and I will have to spend more time in PS learning the upgrades.

Hello, br br I am Jim and I love to take pictures... (show quote)

HI Jim. Foucs on the lens. It's all about using the right lens. The camera body is by todays standards all equal in functions. Learn what a "fast lens" is! learn what "focal length" is! learn what a "prime" lens is! Learn what a "fixed aperture" does! To get the best photos you will need more than one lens.

I have recently subscribed to Photoshop. I have limited experience with LR (on trial basis).
PS seems to have more features than LR does. What are the features am I missing out on by not subscribing to LR?

hi Kiritm LR & PS have essentially the same "exposure controls", The difference between the 2 programs are that; PS is an editing program and LR is a filing system. PS works on a "pixel level in that it manipulates and moves around pixels, where LR is for photographers that need a fast and easy way to make selections of hundreds of photos. I am a photographer that takes hundreds of shots during one shoot and LR makes it easy to sort out the keepers, as well as do exposure adjustments.
One other thing that might seem small but so important to me is that Photoshop works on only one file at a time an exporting only one file at a time, where LR exports any amount you choose at one time. big time saver.

I've toyed with the idea of buying a wider lens for my crop sensor, only to find out how effective the corrections in photoshop were. I started out by wanting a full frame camera upgrade, which then led me to wanting a wider lens. I now feel that I no longer need a full frame as well as a wider lens, as this would only add a smaller amount to the rooms. In a practical sense I know that the real estate MLS is a small file, and I just can't justify spending 1K to upgrade my equipment. Due to the small crop for the MLS I can't use a pano technique either. AND the shoots only pay $100 and I don't see shooting everyday.

Yesterday during a bright sun and mid day I was asked if I could take some shots of this friend just wanting photos for herself, boyfriend, and family back east. I agreed and did a fast study on using a speed light during the day in bright sun situations. This is by far my first shoot and I would like some opinions on what yall feel I need to work on. I was using a Canon 6D mark ii with a 24-105 is usm lens and a Godox TT685 speed light. Like I said, this is really a first for me and in the end she loves the photos and we all had a great time. Here are a few examples.

Thank you and please if you have comments tell me why you feel that way so I will know what to work on. If you just say they look like crap and don't tell me why then im just going to think your an ass. Give me reason why.

Honestly, I only want to edit one picture at a time and nothing fancy or involved. (for now). Would I need to take a class or do a lot of reading to just do some "basic photo editing"? I'm very middle of the road when it comes to tech savvy or photo editing knowledge. I would appreciate any thoughts. Thank You!

The key phrase is "I only want to edit one picture at a time". Save your money you do not need LR. LR, is specifically for photographers like myself that shoot hundreds of shots on a shoot, and need a program like LR that can handle making selections from hundreds of images. It also will "export" more than one picture at a time, saving time .. Photoshop has the same exposure controls and can edit on a pixel level where LR just selects and adjust exposure quickly.
I find that photoshop is a lot more intense a program than Light Room .
