It's pretty obvious that the author was never aboard an ore carrier if he thought she nosed down from the load shifting, i sailed on them in the mid 1940's and the hatches of the ore compartments are only 12 feet wide , and the chance of the load shifting is nil .

My first cruise was on CV 12, and i'd hate to think of going through customs from one of those 15/18 story jobs, can't even guess how long that would take.
