Works for me. Love it!

ok please don't take this question the wrong way but why does his bokeh work and mine doesn't? is it because mine isn't smooth like his? im really trying to understand not be for lack of a better word whiny.

Here is a link to the 4 top vote-getters in the contest a few months back. I imagine many disagree with the results, but my favorite of the contest was the flower. Note how the composition is really balanced and how the black enhances the flower's shape. Of course this might not meet the "relationship of subject to space" :) Yep, the more we talk about it, the more confused I get!

this is a terrible pp job i was trying to replace my busy background with something empty and undistracting to see if i was actually getting the point of negative space but i don't know how to pp stuff well at all i'm almost too embarrassed to post it but i'll never learn if i don't put myself out there right.... ??? ugh this is terrible i hope you get the essence of what i was trying to do and don't get caught up on how terrible it actually looks

sorry i couldn't leave that terrible picture up believe me it was awful but I think i am getting the point now i need to go out and take some pics of dead flowers to practice :)

That's not an argument I want to get into as I doubt there is a definitive answer. I have no strong convictions one way or the other.

I apologize I wasn't trying to have an argument I was just curious as to your opinion as I think your shots are beautiful and you are very knowledgable. Please accept my apologies i meant nothing by my question.

I would appreciate thoughts on any aspect of this picture but particularly those regarding composition.

Would you consider this a negative space photo?

Not so much "negative space" for me because of varied colors and shapes in background.

hmm had to get that much bokeh because if not it would have been a house and car in my picture (YUCK). So if i understand correctly if I would have taken the picture against the sky with the same composition that would have been negative space?

Nightski mentioned she would like others to post pictures with negative space... so here goes... what do you think negative space or not?

A few things that may or may not help, depending on what you want out of the photo. To bring out the boy's face, I cropped, burned the shadows on his face a bit, burned the arm a bit (should have probably done the same to the far hand).

I'm glad you are working on improvement. Work and open eyes and ears, such as you have, should do you well.

wow I have a lot of learning to do pp and I don't get along lol I can crop and reduce highlights but other then that I can't do much else. Thanks for looking and helping.

Well I thought I better show you because I sensed that you thought I was being sarcastic, when really my intent was to show you a possibility.
So I thought I should show you how beautiful and moody dead flowers can be. And those images in the link are just a very quick search without even trying to look for quality.

lol no I was going to give it try even before the pics but I'm glad you gave me link because now I have some ideas as to how to compose it. I will try to photograph anything at least once :) I just have never thought of "dead" things as photo worthy, now I know differently so thank you :)

I love 3,6,8,and 9 with 6 and 9 being my favorites! The red tree in 6 is definitely not muted! The leading line of the fencepost in 9 with the beautiful sky at the top is just great!

Thank you for showing me these pics I NEVER would have thought to go out there and snap some pics before I trim them all down for the winter.
