Not a bad response. I usually keep my camera on program at 400 ISO.
Picks a mid range Aperture and Shutter speed - you can adjust up or down with one dial.

Absolutely true. Asked my grandfather who's an attorney.

Well, I'm not an attorney but if he is stating, like the other poster that "if you can see it you can photograph it"' I can only wonder which branch of law he works in. Ask him to try taking photos inside the security area of his local airport; inside a nuclear power plant facility; through the fence of his local infants school; through the bedroom window of the lady next door. Need I go on?
Furthermore, if the lady is charging for prints then technically that is a commercial use of an image of the horse owner's property and she should get a model/property release.
Would be happy to be corrected if I should be incorrect.

If it can be seen from a public area - taking pictures through a window - not so much, there was that expectation of privacy. Going into a "secured" area, same thing, on private property, again not allowed. It is a complicated issue. As far as commercial use, I think the subject needs to be identifiable. But whenever in doubt contact a professional who specializes in copyright law.

Perhaps it would be better phrased, "Family, gotta tolerate them."

Social Security is not Govt. Subsistance - you paid for it.

While I don't do photography full time it is about 20% of my income.
If I think I can parlay it into a better paying job I'll give something out for free (for example - did a product shot and instead of cash got refreshments for a gallery opening for free).
I also am careful about giving up jpgs - much harder to control what happens to a jpg - far better to give a small print.
Great shot too --

I'm pretty sure you need live view on the camera.
I can do live view with my 50D (which has live view but not an articulating screen) but not with the 30D (which doesn't have live view)
Since you may have to invest in a new camera to do what you want - get one with the articulated screen -- you'll be much happier with it.

Both Canon and Nikon have some nice equipment in your price range. Start with the kit lens (comes with the camera). It's functional and will get you started.
I LOVE Canon - but Nikon, Sony, Pentax etc. make really good quality equipment as well. I'd say pick up a couple different cameras at your local best buy or other store and see which you are most comfortable with.
I'm clumsy so I like a bigger model camera and Canon is usually a bit larger then the Nikon (until you get into the real high end models).
Once you get comfortable with the camera you can start working up to higher quality lenses.

Personally - I always have a UV filter on (to protect my lens more then anything else).
A polarizer might be nice if the beach are is really bright but a good lens hood is better. Try not to shoot people with the light behind you - they squint.
Low ISO (full auto and the camera picks everything so I don't recommend that but I know people that only shoot full auto).
Since you have no pressure to perform - enjoy it! Use different lenses (from wide angle to telephoto) to get different looks.
I always like a nice wide angle shot of the service but also do some in tight on just the bride and groom.

True - some weddings are more casual which is why I'm back to dress slacks and a button down shirt.
I'm thinking a nice pant suit as a skirt is just not functional for the job, or slacks and a nice top.

Back in the day (about 20-25 years ago) when I did a lot of weddings, the standard (in my area) was a tuxedo (or at the very least a black suit and tie).
Even the few female photographers I knew wore black tuxes.
I did a lot of weddings back then (working for not only myself but 3 or 4 other studios).
Today I do weddings for friends (and occasionally a friend of a friend)
I wear dark slacks, a button down shirt, tie and if weather permits a black jacket.

Personally I only shoot in manual when I use an external light meter or in the studio with flash. If I'm going to use the meter in the camera, then set the camera to match what it says to do I might as well just let the camera do it.
A, T or P - all work roughly the same way and saves me a step.

Simple solution - let the people casting aspersions publish their returns for the past 10 years, let Obama publish his returns for the past 10 years (and show an original birth certificate and explain why his campaign literature from chicago says he was born in kenya).

What's good for the goose is good for the gander. I wanna see them all! If I can't see them all I won't consider any of them.
