Very well done. Great capture. I'm sure he will love it.

Thank you for the kind words. I've know him (About 30+years) for a long time, and I just thought he should have a Portrait of his self. I know his kids will some day appreciate this shot. (Not because I shot it)

Anyway...I thank you for your time to look, and the nice words as well. I Thank You!!!

Thanks,
Boone.

I don't know enough to grade portrait work, but I really like what you did on "Deeder's" portrait. He strikes me as a great friend that anyone would want as a friend. Just curious, does He have any military history? I envy your talent. I would say that He will be very proud of his portrait, but He won't say too much about it.

I don't know enough to grade portrait work, but I ... (show quote)

Again...your conclusions are "Correct"! Firstly, Deeder is a great friend and your right..."He is not one to say a lot".

And yes...he was in the U.S Army for 12 years when he was younger.

He really takes pride in his work, and I love all that he did for me. I am lucky and honored to have him as a friend!!!

Thanks again for your time to take a look!

Thanks,
Boone.

This is only my observation. It is a very good portrait, it has excellent illumination and posing. What bothers me is that light on the left upper side of the background. The subject has specular highlights in both eyes while there is a bright spot of light at his back. This does not look natural.
In my case and if this was my portrait I will not put a light in that left upper corner.

I truly thank you for the look and your personal observation. I wanted this light in the background to add to the "Fog" that I knew he liked from him seeing some of my other work. I agree that the shot could be done with or without the light. A 16" x 16" non-gridded soft box was used for the Key light.

I guess it is a matter of what you see, or like.

BTW: If you look at his eyes, the highlight is created by the Key Light, (I am sure you know this) but if you look at his glasses, in the right (Your left) lens you can see the 2x2 gridded soft box overhead that is the Fill Light.

It's only a matter of how "You See" or "Feel" what the client wants.
However, your observation is well taken, and I thank you for the input.

Thanks again for your comments, and mostly for the nice words as well as your time. Thank You so very much!!!

Thanks,
Boone.

Very nice! Captures his character wonderfully!

I am so glad that others, like you, have seen the "Character" in his eyes. This makes my effort really worth it to me!
I so thank you for the kind words, and the look. I know that all the people here on UHH, have other things to do with your time, and I thank you for this time. It means a lot to me, and I so very much "Thank You"!

I suspect your 4 light set up will produce a 5th light - the one on his face when he sees this marvelous portrait!

Boy I hope your right! And I thank you.

Being a Portrait Photographer for many years, I try to capture the subjects "Character", and I am glad when a shoot comes together. Again, I thank you very much.

Deeder is, and has been a great friend. He is what some may call; "A Jack of All Trades". Deeder has done carpentry finish work for me, as well as lay carpet, cement work, and several other construction jobs. He is very proud of his work, and he always makes things look super. This was a Portrait that shows that. I am very happy how it came out.

He is a "Special Person Indeed"! Again, I thank you so much for taking the time to look at my work! Thank You!

Thanks,
Boone.

Impressive, Boone. You have caught his personality in his expression, seems to be unapologetic steadfast and opinionated and steadfast to his beliefs. And I see kindness in his eyes. He looks comfortable. I love seeing his tats on his biceps. I think you captured him well and I think he'll be pleased with the result.

I Must have done what I set out to do, because your analysis of this portrait is "Exactly" what I was trying to achieve. Your quote: "unapologetic steadfast and opinionated and steadfast to his beliefs. And I see kindness in his eyes. He looks comfortable", Is spot on!!!

I love to do Portraits (It is my forte) and I believe that a Portrait is..."A Portrayal Of the Subjects Character"! And this is what I try to reflect in my work.

I thank you for looking, and for your "Exact Analysis" of this shot.

I Thank You, and it makes me feel good inside!

Thanks,
Boone.

who has done so many nice things for me!!!

His real name is Donald but everyone calls him "Deeder".

Deeder has worked for me many times over the years, and even now that I'm retired (For all intents & purpose) he

still comes around.

Anyway...he rarely excepts money from me. (And others) So one night over a couple of cold ones, I ask him if he

would let me do a Portrait of him. After he listened to what I had to say (And it wasn't easy!) he agreed.

I did the attached Portrait of him earlier this month. He hasn't seen it yet, but he will in a few days.

I assure you...he will "TRY TO PAY ME"...but it will be my turn to "LAUGH & WALK AWAY!

Shoot Specs:

Camera: Nikon D750
Lens: Nikon 24-120, f/4 @ 85 mm.
4 light set up.

Please Note: The white lines on the outer edges of the image, these are "Guidelines For Me" during my mounting procedure. "These Will Not Be Seen" on the final image.

Thanks,
Boone.

After recovering from a badly broken left wrist (6 places) I have found that I can no longer use my left hand with my cameras. Besides the fact that I have decided to simplify my photography gear (a DSLR and a mirrorless plus 7 lenses, two gear bags, three tripods, etc.).

So I have sold/traded in all of my gear for a simple but powerful Ricoh GR III. Built in IBIS, ND filter, fixed lens with built in lens cover, live histogram, focus peaking and electronic level, and best of all, designed for one handed shooting.

Does UHH frown on Ricoh owners? Just wondering because I don’t think I have ever seen a Ricoh post.
