Very, very interesting setup. Is that a hydraulic piston in the middle? How much vertical range of motion do you get? I'm new to using a gimbal and thought that the lens should be adjusted so the center of lens is centered with the pivot point. In your setup the lens is adjusted way above the pivot point. Do you have better control this way? I'm always interested in others innovative ideas. Thanks for posting
No piston but an adjustable spring action to fine tune the balance point.
The vertical movement is about 3 feet so you can bring the gimbal above your head or drop it to waist level.
It will allow tracking of a bird at water level in front of you to it flying over your head. The lens is a 14 LB lens and with camera it is about 16 pounds. It allows you to have full flexibility
I plan on showing some other pics soon.
I am thinking of making a kit so that all you need would be the Gimbal, Tripod and weights from Walmart, a dollar a pound for the weights.
Still have some refining to do.
I have been experimenting with a tripod and mini jib head for birds in flight. It is a bit more to carry or move but if you shoot from a fixed location it has a lot of benefits over just using a tripod and head. One being the whole camera and lens becomes very light to work with, it allows you to lift the camera over your head to get the high shots as well as lowering it down to get the water skimming shots.
I frequent a area where we setup and shoot BIF at a local marina in winter where there is a variety of duck swans and geese.
Here is and picture of the unit I built, I still have more refining to do to it.

I happened on this application and thought some of you might find it interesting. Click on this link and it will take you to a video demonstration on CNET. Pretty cool.

Been using it for a few months now DSLR Controller still in Beta but useful.
I mounted a camera on the top of a 12 painters pole and control it with this app. Great for those high shots.
If you have a wifi Canon D60 it will control it wirelessly
Also use it for Macro mounting the camera on the underside of the tripod allows you to focus and even do a series of stacked focus shots automaticly and 32 levels of HDR

Mounted on a Painter pole
Photo using the setup
I would assume Professional Photographers Association
This is one reason I will go into HDR 3 shot mode on the canon I will take 3 shots in a row at what ever you have it set to, 1 under, 1 normal, and 1 over, and then pick the best image or do HDR. all taken within a second no need to manually change settings.

Nicely done. But I am not sure you needed 12 exposures to achieve that. Think of the card space, hard disk space and time you will save. It also increases the risk of movements of subjects, and misalignment and ghosting during the processing.
Yes I know it was not needed but had to try it to see the results :)
Thanks for the coment
Actually I was only in one shot (cut and paste)

Good looking Shots !
Where did you purchase the softbox
I still can't do cross eyed but am able to do parallel viewing
oh well one day
I would imagine it will depend on the contrast in the Scene and the levels of detail. I have seen an image taken inside a Cathedral where you can see the details in the black areas and in the windows and this was a 32 image HDR at 1/3 f stops each
Field of Dreams
This movie is great in 3D
The cool Dude
19 image HDR
over 60 acres off the side of a major Highway
first one is a jpg from the camera and the second one is a 12 image hdr
canon 5d II 28-135 mm lens 100 iso used DSLR controller to do the HDR images
non HDR camera processed
12 image HDR
Most camera stores carry the 3/8 to 1/4 bushing adaptor no need to order one.
