We just had some interesting reading on histograms in the book club this month. If anyone wants more information on histograms, head over to the book club and see the reading choices for July, (top of the page) we have a few links to articles on histograms.

That sounds like another learning/information tool. I searched for the Book Club, please point me in the correct direction.
Thank you!

If I tether my Canon Rebel T3 to the lap top, can I gain any control of the cameras functions, will I still need to buy a remote control to snap a picture. (canon Rebel T3 remotes rarely work at all, what will replace it?) What about focus and other controls? Can record video, can I stop/start the camera? Is there wireless tethering? I want the laptop inside the house.

I have used the "Trigger Trap" have a look at the youtube by CameraRec Toby. This thing is better than a pocket on a shirt.

On a serious note my new larger camera bag/backpack arrived today - so the only thing still on my list is a true macro lens.

I'm looking for a camera back pack, sling bag what ever, which one did you get? When you get around to it lets us know how it works for you..
Thanx,

I would have second thought about buying the one on ebay. It attaches to the tripod socket and you have to move your strap to attach to the tripod socket also. Plenty of discussions here about the safety of using the tripod socket bushing for straps.

Wrong, if you notice when the strap is attached to the camera tripod attach fitting the strap has a 1/4 -20 female internal fitting , strap stays attached, tripod attaches, there ya go, "RockOn"
I'm thinking that the reason things come off is because they were not attached securely in the first place and checked frequently,
Just sayin.

For the SX50,can anyone tell me:
How do you turn off "live view" to use the viewfinder to save battery?
How do you update firmware? I don't see any thing in the manual, and the camera didn't come with a cord for that. I used the cord from another camera and all I got was pictbridge for printing from camera.

Sorry can't help with the SX50. I thought Canon would send a firmware update notice until now. I went to the canon site listed here and there it was, a update for my 550D that I was not aware of. Thank you for the question and thank you "Ugly Hedgehog" for the great info.

It is easy to put your multi-tool, Vaseline, and cleaning gadgets in your checked luggage and only carry that which would surely not be confiscated, like your camera.... Of course, I watched a small child forced to give up a miniature hockey stick while the woman next in line passed through with a set of knitting needles.

Checked baggage? I retired from the Airlines and I know about checked baggage. I now check nothing. I travel lite, I even keep my camera gear to a bare minimum, (still forget things)

What emergency repair do you project might occur and would or do you perform them at home? An airplane is a bit different from a camera. An emergency landing in a desert is a far cry from an emergency landing by your camera. Most people do not have the tools/knowledge to effect a repair on a crashed camera. Your best tool for a vacation photo op disaster is a VISA card supplemented by a trip to the nearest camera store for a replacement.

What I do carry includes supplies to clean the lens/filter (small blower, FilterKlean with brush, coating safe cleaner and a clean optical grade cloth.) and a small multi-tip screwdriver with specific driver inserts to fit whatever screws might loosen. The secret is to go LIGHT. You will enjoy the trip more.

I do the same except I have a small tube of Vaseline to put on the filter threads, just enough to make them glisten, you don't want or need much..was going to add a multi tool but it would only add to the TSA collection..

A speed typist I'm not. Any kind of typist for that matter..My bag is really bad. Got enough stuff stuck to it that no one would want it..
I'm trying to find a good bag, I would say perfect but as I have noticed here there is no such thing..
This group are great, entertaining as well as informative..

I was sitting around wondering if any of you carry simple tools in your camera bag for emergency repairs.

I went to my workshop to gather a few items from my Aircraft days and ended up with a complete Snap-On roll away. How is one to put that in a Lowepro?

I'm sure there are some items that can't be carried through TSA but which ones do you think are safe to carry, guess that depends on which day and which mentally deficient humanoid your lucky enough to encounter.

Just askin,

That is to easy. I prefer to use my local camera store, which is not really a camera store, it use to be but now it's Ritz, I enjoy seeing the look on there faces when I ask..At my age it does not take a lot to entertain me. But thanks Jerry. I just watched a youtube about the Holga.

Wow, you guys must live in a lot of really bad areas. I would have no hesitation about purchasing equipment from Walmart. The one I shop at is within 1/2 mile and is very nice. Open 24/7 I do my shopping very early and have the store to my self. Prices are right. And if you bought that open camera and the price was right then you could send it off for cleaning. Of course get a 5 year warranty as you would with any camera of high cost.

In your writings here i see Homophobes (who question their own sexuality), Xenophobes (who hate grand ma who came from Hungry or Argentina etc.), and other forms of hate mongering (to bolster their own ego) ... surly you listen to right wing radio!!! I wouldn't be surprised if you are all Nikon/Canon DSLR owners or wannabees. Oh! Yes! almost forgot ... use Incident Meters for judging light rather than the excellent system built into their modern cameras.

I'm still trying to find a Holga, in Walmart or any Mart for that matter..

"Chinese Junk"? For those on here that are way past, and I mean way past, puberty you will remember society's thoughts about Japanese products. I'm just sayin.

My darling wife is always spouting about how inferior Chinese made products are. I always remind her that she was made in China, in Harbin to be exact.

My point is that whilst there are inferior products from all corners of our planet there is really no need to bash a whole country..

Just a random observation from a old man.
